The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has swung into a Clean and Green drive in centres across the country, following a directive from the Union Sports Minister, Kiren Rijiju, in an attempt to create a more environment-friendly atmosphere in the sporting arenas.

Saplings of trees, special in a particular region, will be planted in the 12 regional centres of SAI and in all the stadiums.

The idea is to increase the green cover in the campus by nurturing local plants that may bear fruits also. Rain water harvesting will be utilised to maintain the green cover.

The waste management system will be streamlined to segregate bio-degradable and non-degradable garbage.

Special areas marked for the purpose will be used to convert biodegradable waste into manure for the plants in the campus.

Awareness workshops will be organised for the benefit of athletes to inculcate the principles of the Clean and Green drive, which has emerged from the pledge taken by the Sports Minister on the World Environment Day this year.
