A day on from expressing confidence in the standard of the accommodation provided for athletes and officials at Rio 2016, IOC president Thomas Bach moved in to the Olympic village on Thursday. Bach, who won a gold medal in fencing at the 1976 Games in Montreal, is due to sleep in the village "as often as possible", according to the IOC.

He is staying in the same block as the Refugee Olympic team. "The Olympic village is the heart of the Olympic Games and you can really feel the excitement growing as the Games approach," said Bach.

"Here in the village athletes from around the world can come together as competitors and share their experiences."

The Australian team complained about a host of problems at the village on Sunday, but chef de mission Kitty Chiller said 24 hours later that "fantastic progress" had been made.
