In the Manchester World Cup match against Afghanistan, England’s Joe Root was involved in two century partnerships, with Jonny Bairstow and Eoin Morgan, yet did not reach a century. Has this happened before? Also, Root has been involved in five century partnerships in the ongoing World Cup. Has any other player been involved in more in a single edition of a World Cup? – Ajit Krishnan, Chennai.

Joe Root could only manage an 88. This is the first time in World Cup history that a batsman could not manage a century despite being involved in two 100-plus stands in the same innings.

The five century stands by Root in World Cup 2019 now equal the record held by Pakistan’s Javed Miandad (1992) and Sri Lankan Tillakaratne Dilshan (2015).

In the World Cup match between Australia and Sri Lanka at the Oval, both captains – Aaron Finch (153) and Dimuth Karunaratne (97) – top-scored for their respective sides. Has this occurred in a World Cup match before? If so, have both captains registered centuries in the same WC match? – S. Rajan, Nagpur.

The Oval match provided the ninth such instance when both captains top-scored in the same World Cup match. Never have both captains managed hundreds in the same World Cup match. The closest was the recent Oval match when Dimuth Karunaratne missed his century by three runs!
