Saloni Dalal sets national record; Virdhawal Khade signs off in style

Saloni Dalal broke the 100m national record and Virdhawal Khade left a mark on the penultimate day of the Nationals as he set a new meet record in 50m butterfly.

Saloni Dalal underlined her growing stature as she set a new national record in 100m breaststroke.

From the start, it was a two-horse race between Saloni and Kareena Shankta. Kareena gave Saloni a run for her money but Saloni narrowly managed to ward off the challenge at the finish. It was her third gold and second record, clocking 1:14.87s to break Chahat Arora's old mark.

For the past three days, he watched youngsters hog the limelight but on the penultimate day, Virdhawal left his indelible mark in the Glenmark 72nd National Swimming championship at the BR Ambedkar Aquatic complex in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday.

Virdhawal Khade signed off in style as he set a new meet record in 50m butterfly. He led from start-to-finish and won the race in 24.26 seconds. The 27-year-old broke his nine-year-old record (24.36) set in 2009. Khade also met the B standards qualifying norms for the world meet. Khade's traditional rivals Supriya Mondal and Sharma SP Nair finished second and third respectively.

Advait Page narrowly missed 400m medley national record. Adavit trailed initially but came to the lead in the backstroke leg. He consolidated the lead in the butterfly and threatened to sink the record with a blistering freestyle leg but finished in 4:30.92 seconds, just missing the mark.

Richa Mishra of Police powered her way to her fourth individual gold by winning the women's 800m freestyle event in 9:14.22s. Richa finished nearly 25 metres ahead of her rivals. Bhavika Dugar pipped Khushi Dinesh to take the silver medal.

The day's other impressive performers were Kenisha Gupta, who narrowly missed the national mark in 100m freestyle, and the promising 15-year-old Neel Roy who won the 100m freestyle ahead of Srihari Nataraj.
