Karman Kaur sailed past seventh seed Pia Suomalainen of Finland 6-3, 6-1 in the second qualifying round of the $50,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament in Toronto. In the third and final qualifying round, Karman was set to play the 15-year-old local girl Isabelle Boulais.
Meanwhile, in the $10,000 ITF men’s Futurs in Antalya, Turkey, Haadin Bava was rewarded for qualifying into the main draw, with a first round against second seed Cem Ilkel of Turkey.
Preethi Ujjini wrestled her way past qualifier Aareyalee Amrutsinh Chavan 7-6(9), 6-4 in the first round of the $10,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament at the VIP’s Club courts on Monday. In a battle of wits that lasted two hours and 21 minutes, Preethi handled the tie-break of the first set with competence as she converted the fifth setpoint to clinch the initiative. In the second set, Preethi went up 3-1 and managed to squeeze her way through.
Sixth seed Prarthana Thombare warded off a threat from Shivika Burman, while fifth seed Sharrmadaa Baluu was teased by qualifier Amreen Naaz in the first set, before the seeded players pulled through in straight sets.
While the lone foreign entrant Hsin-Yuan Shih of Chinese Taipei managed to hang on, in the singles event, she was beaten in partnership with Varunya chandrashekar by Sneha Padamata and Moulika Ram 10-7 in the super tie-break in the pre-quarterfinals of doubles.
