Wimbledon 2018, Day 7: Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Serena cruise to quarters

Elsewhere, Novak Djokovic beats Karen Khachanov 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 to enter the quarerfinals; he will lock horns with Kei Nishikori.

And for the first time since 2011, Rafael Nadal has reached the quarterfinals of SW19.

11.03 pm: Business as usual for Rafael Nadal. He makes short work of Jiri Vesely and thumps the Czech in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 to move into the quarterfinals. Top class stuff from the second seed Spaniard.

11.00 pm: Kevin Anderson is level 4-4 in the fourth set with Monfils. Looks like the match is going the distance.

10.35 pm: A series of excellent returns by Jiri Vesely rewards with the break and the Czech leads Rafael Nadal 3-2 in the third set. Nadal won the first two 6-3, 6-3.

10.15 pm: A doubles marathon. Robin Haase and R. Lindstedt prevail in the end. The pair beat N. Mektic/A. Peya 7-5, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6, 8-6.

10.00 pm: Juan Martin Del Potro and G. Simon are out and are warming up. We can expect a cracker of a contest!

9.47 pm: It is business as usual for Rafael Nadal. He leads Jiri Vesely 6-3.

9.40 pm: Japan's Kei Nishikori wins a four-set marathon. He lords over Ernests Gulbis 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (10), 6-1. He is the first Japanese man to reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon since Shuzo Matsuoka in 1995.  ( Match report )

9.34 pm: Good news for Indian tennis lovers. Divij Sharan and his partner Artem Sitak have bounced back from a two-set deficit to march into the quarterfinals beating J. Erlich and M. Matkowski 1-6, 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

9.27 pm: John Isner surges into the quarterfinals. A straight sets win for Isner. He gets the better of Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 7-6(8), 7-6(4). This is Isner's best SW19 performance.  ( Match report )

9.23 pm: South Africa's Kevin Anderson is doing all the talking on Court No. 1. He leads Gael Monfils 7-6(4), 7-6(2).

 

9:13pm: Nadal is in action against Vesely on centre court. The first set is level at 1-1.

9:08pm: Kei Nishikori takes the third set after clinching a long tie-breaker 12-10. He leads 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 against Ernests Gulbis.

9:00pm : Rafael Nadal will be in action against Jiri Vesely on centre court very soon. Stay tuned for updates.

8:58pm: Jelena Ostapenko and Christina McHale withdraw from their women's doubles clash against Heather Watson and Tatjana Maria.

8:46pm: Serena wins!  She defeats Evgeniya Rodina 6-2, 6-2 and cruises through to the quarterfinals. That's 18 Wimbledon wins in a row for her now. ( match report )

8:43 pm: Serena is just a game away from heading into the quarterfinals. She leads 5-2 in the second set, after winning the first 6-2.

8:33 pm: John Isner wins the second set 7-6 after a fiercely contested tiebreaker against Stefanos Tsitsipas.

8:32 pm: Kevin Anderson takes the first set 7-6 against Gael Monfils.

8:30 pm: Milos Raonic advances to the quartefinals after defeating Mackenzie McDonald 6-3, 6-4, 6-7, 6-2. He hit 37 aces in the match. ( match report )

8:27 pm: Serena Williams is 3-0 up in the second set. It's looking easy.

In other sports...

8:17 pm: Meanwhile, Gael Monfils and Kevin Anderson and fighting it out hard. Anderson levels the first set at 5-5.

8:15 pm: Serena breezes through the first set, winning it 6-2 against Evgeniya Rodina.

Meanwhile, Daria Kasatkina is in the quarterfinals after defeating Alison Van Uytvanck 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-2. She will fight it out with Angelique Kerber for a place in the semifinals! ( match report )

8:00 pm: An ace after a double fault, deuce game, another unreturnable serve, a weak serve and a decent rally. It has been an erratic service game from Serena but she will be pleased with that backhand winner to clinch the game to go 4-1 up in the game.

7:52 pm: The former World No. 1 has been dominant so far. She pockets her service game in a jiffy to go 3-0 up.

7:50 pm: Serena gets the break in quick time. Nerves for Rodina?

7.45 pm: Serena wins the first game with considerable ease. Powerful and ripping forehands in sight from Serena in the first game itself. 

7:40 pm: It's time for Serena Williams vs Evgeniya Rodina , the battle of moms.

7.34 pm: Daria Kasatkina wins the second set 6-3 against Alison van Uytvanck.

7:32 pm: Not a good start for the day for India at Wimbledon. J. Erlich and M. Matkowski lead Divij Sharan and A. Sitak 6-1.

7:30 pm: In the men's doubles, we have the pair of F. Nielsen and J. Salisbury leading J. Cabal and R. Farah 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-3.

7.29 pm: Angelique Kerber, the highest seed left in the women’s draw, defeats Belinda Bencic 6-3, 7-6.

7.28 pm: Roger Federer has won 32 consecutive sets at Wimbledon. He needs two more to equal his record from 2005-06.

7.25 pm: Roger Federer through to the quarterfinals. Mannarino gave him a fight in the third set also but the Swiss star prevailed to take the game 6-0, 7-5, 5-4.

7.21 pm: Angelique Kerber had a match point but Bencic saved it and we now have a tie-break on Court 1.

7. 06 pm: Milos Raonic goes two sets up against Mackenzie McDonald by winning the second 6-4.

7.02 pm: Julia Goerges wins the second set and defeats Donna Vekic 6-3, 6-2. She is through to the quarterfinals for the first time.

6.50 pm: Kei Nishikori loses the first set 6-4 to Ernests Gulbis.

6.46 pm: Federer takes the second set 7-5. Mannarino made him work for that but Federer prevailed and he now has a two-set lead.

6.43 pm: Daria Kasatkina fought to take the first to a tie-break but Alison Van Uytvanck wins the first set 7-6.

6.41 pm: Mannarino leads Federer 5-4 in the second set. He’s a game away from levelling things on Centre Court.

6.28 pm: Milos Raonic serves for the first set and takes it 6-3 against American Mackenzie McDonald.

6.23 pm: On Court 3, Julia Goerges wins the first set 6-3 against Donna Vekic.

6.22 pm: Angelique Kerber takes the first set 6-3 against Belinda Bencic, after going 3-1 down. The former World No. 1 is the highest rated top seed left in the tournament.

This is the first time Kiki Bertens has entered the quarterfinals of Wimbledon.

5.55 pm: Roger Federer takes the first set 6-0 against Adrian Mannarino. He stormed through the opening set in 16 minutes.

5.50 pm: We have an upset! Kiki Bertens has got the better of Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 7-6(1). With this, all of the top 10 seeds are out of the tournament. ( Report )

5.46 pm: Camila Giorgi storms into the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Ekaterina Makarova. ( Report )

It will be Dominika Cibulkova vs Jelena Ostapenko in a quarterfinal.

5.37 pm: Dominica Cibulkova storms into the quarterfinals. She beats Hsieh Su-wei 6-4, 6-1. ( Report )

5.36 pm: Former World No. 1 Angelique Kerber is out warming up. She will face B. Bencic.

5.35 pm: The King of Wimbledon, Roger Federer meanwhile walks out and gets warming up. He will meet Adrian Mannarino on Centre Court.

5.30 pm: How easy was that for Jelena Ostapenko. After a horrid start, getting broken early, she gets back on track and thumps Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7-6(4), 6-0. ( Report )

5.28 pm: Ostapenko is serving for the match with a 5-0 lead in the second set over Sasnovich.

5.25 pm: On Court 17, in the women's doubles, G. Dabrowski and Y. Xu got the better of V. King and K. Srebotnik 6-3, 6-3.

5.20 pm: Ostapenko, meanwhile, storms into a 4-0 lead in the second set over Sasnovich.

5.17 pm: On Court 5, B. McLachlan/J. Struff lead P. Petzschner/T. Puetz 6-3, 6-4 while J. Murray/B. Soares are also in the lead against K. Skupski/N. Skupski 6-3, 6-4.

5.12 pm: Bertens is going great guns. She is commanding proceedings against the No.7 seed Pliskova with a 6-3, 3-0 lead.

5.04 pm: What a comeback from Ostapenko. She manages to edge out Sasnovich 7-6 (4) in the first set. The 12th seed is up and running!

5.04 pm: Camilia Giorgi takes the lead. She wins the first set 6-3 over Ekaterina Marakova.

5.02 pm: Dominika Cibulkova wins the first set 6-4 against Hsieh Su-wei.

4.53 pm: If Kiki Bertens does win, that would leave Angelique Kerber as the highest seed at Wimbledon. Kerber takes on Belinda Bencic later in the day.

4.50 pm: Kiki Bertens takes the first set 6-3 against Karolina Pliskova. Do we have another upset on our hands? Pliskova did come back from a set down in her last game though.

4.46 pm: Jelena Ostapenko has hit four double-faults as of now but makes it 4-5 in the first set.

4.30 pm: Karolina Pliskova breaks Kiki Bertens, makes it 3-3 in the first set.

4.27 pm: Jelena Ostapenko fights back and takes the fourth game against Aliaksandra Sasnovich, who leads 3-1 in the first set.

4.18 pm: Karolina Pliskova, the only top 10 seed left, is taking on Kiki Bertens on the No. 2 Court.

4:17 pm: Jelena Ostapenko broken in the second game of the first set by Aliaksandra Sasnovich, who leads 2-0.
