Davis Cupper and the India’s No.1 player at the moment, Prajnesh Gunneswaran was beaten 6-2, 6-2 by Marcel Granollers of Spain on grass in the first round of the ATP tennis tournament in Newport, Rhode Island.
The other Davis Cupper, Ramkumar Ramanathan, won his second and final qualifying round against Yuichi Sugita of Japan 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-3 to make the main draw. In doubles, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Purav Raja went down fighting in two tie-breaks to Mao-Xin Gong and Ze Zhang of China in the pre-quarterfinals.
In the Challenger in Kazakhstan, Sidharth Rawat beat the Uzbek Davis Cupper Sanjar Fayziev with surprising ease at 6-2, 6-2.
