Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek progressed to the third round while Stefanos Tsitsipas suffered a shock defeat at the US Open on Wednesday.

Three-time champion Djokovic defeated Bernabe Zapata Miralles of Spain in straight sets to set up a third-round clash with compatriot Laslo Djere, who beat French qualifier Hugo Gaston.

Iga Swiatek continued her title defense with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Australia’s Daria Saville in a tricky second-round match.

However, seventh-seeded Greek Tsitsipas was yet again subjected to an early exit from the final Major of the year after he lost to Swiss qualifier Dominic Stricker in a five-set thriller.

Last year’s men’s runner-up Casper Ruud too was knocked out of the tournament after 4-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-0, 2-6 loss to China’s Zhizhen Zhang.
