World No. 1 Rafael Nadal recovered from a set down for the second match in succession to reach the US Open last 16 for a ninth time on Saturday, beating Argentine lucky loser Leonardo Mayer 6-7 (3/7), 6-3, 6-1, 6-4.

The 31-year-old Nadal took his record over the world number 59 from Buenos Aires to 4-0 and will face Ukraine's Alexander Dolgopolov for a place in the quarter-finals.

FEDERER ROUTS LOPEZ

Swiss third seed Roger Federer advanced to the last 16 by taking his 13th victory in as many matches against Spanish 31st seed Feliciano Lopez.

The 19-time Grand Slam champion, seeking his record sixth title on the New York hardcourts, won 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 to book a fourth-round meeting with German 33rd seed Philipp Kohlschreiber, who is 0-11 for his career against Federer. ( Detailed report )

DOLGOPOLOV SHRUGS OFF GAMBLING ROW TO REACH LAST-16

Alexandr Dolgopolov shrugged off the gambling controversy hanging over him to reach the fourth round of the US Open on Saturday, matching his best New York showing in the process.

The 64th-ranked Ukrainian needed only 82 minutes to dispatch 52nd-ranked Serbian Viktor Troicki 6-1, 6-0, 6-4, and reach his first Grand Slam last 16 since the 2011 US Open.

But his achievements have been overshadowed by concerns over suspicious gambling patterns around his 6-3, 6-3 loss last week to 114th-ranked Thiago Monteiro in the first round at Winston-Salem Open.

DEL POTRO, THIEM WIN IN STRAIGHT SETS

Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, the men's 24th seed, beat 11th-seeded Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut 6-3 6-3 6-4 to enter the fourth round.

Del Potro faces sixth-seeded Austrian Dominic Thiem next.

The sixth-seeded Austrian beat Adrian Mannarino of France 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.

The 23-year-old has progressed to the fourth round in his last five Grand Slams, starting with the 2016 US Open, but has progressed past that stage only once, reaching the semifinals of the French Open.
