Khelo India: TN tops athletics medal table

Tamil Nadu topped the medal table in athletics with five gold, eight silver and six bronze at the Khelo India School Games on Saturday.

Sumathira Balakrishnan of Tamil Nadu clocked her personal best of 56.39 seconds to win the girls 400m event in the Khelo India School Games in Delhi on Saturday.

Sumathira Balakrishnan of Tamil Nadu clocked her personal best of 56.39 seconds to clinch the girls 400 metres gold as the athletics competition concluded in the Khelo India School Games at the Nehru Stadium here on Saturday.

Sumathira, who won the relay gold as well for Tamil Nadu, along with M. Kowsalya, Steffi Olimba and V. Lekha, ahead of Kerala, beat the 800-metre champion Tai Bamhane for her individual gold in the 400 metres.

Abhishek Singh of Uttar Pradesh and Aparna Roy of Kerala were declared the "best athletes" in the boys and girls sections respectively.

Tamil Nadu topped the medal table in athletics with five gold, eight silver and six bronze. Kerala had five gold, seven silver and five bronze, followed by Maharashtra with five gold, four silver and two bronze.

In swimming, Neel Roy and Kenisha Gupta of Maharashtra won the 50-metre freestyle as well as  the 200-metre individual medley in the boys and girls sections respectively. Srihari Nataraj of Karnataka sustained his good work and added the 200-metre backstroke gold along with the medley relay gold.

Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh dominated wrestling by winning three gold medals each, leaving the other gold for Maharashtra.
