BWF World Championships: Srikanth, Prannoy, Sai Praneeth through to second round - As it happened

22:33 |SRIKANTH WINS

- He wraps up the third game quickly! Kidambi Srikanth is through to the second round, beating Nhat Nguyen 17-21, 21-16, 21-6.

- Uh-oh! Nguyen seems to have bruised his hands on a fall. That's his right hand, too. Medical time out.

But Srikanth is well ahead with a 11-1 lead.

- But it's been all Srikanth since then. He's in control with a 5-1 lead.

- Nguyen gets the first point. And again, it's an unforced error from Srikanth.

- Great defense from Nguyen but Srikanth finishes it with a smash and takes the second game 21-16. The match is level.

- The Indian looks much better in the second game! He leads 17-14.  But he's still on his toes. Nguyen is pulling back slowly.

Oops! Looks like Nguyen has busted his racket. A huge gapinng hole!

- Srikanth fights back! He's in the lead, but narrowly. 13-12

- Unforced errors again. The Indian brilliantly negotiates a shot to the body but wastes a good opportunity for a winner by sending a smash into the net. Srikanth trails 2-5.

- Srikanth brings up his first point of the second game at the end of a long rally. Nguyen leads 3-1.

- Srikanth needs to find his composure here. He's been going down to too many unforced errors. Some advice from Gopichand during the break may help.

- Two more unforced errors from Srikanth and that's game point rto Nguyen and he wins the first game 21-17 with a smash down the line. What a comeback, from 7-14 down to win the game.

- Srikanth is yet to really get into his stride. He seems a little unfocussed as he nets another backhand and gives Nguyen the upper hand in the first game. Nguyen leads 18-17.

- Nguyen fights back. With an unforced error from Srikanth he levels the first game 16-16.

- Srikanth is leading the first game 13-7 against Ireland's Nhat Nguyen.

Yulfira Barkah and Jauza Fadhila Sugiarto, the younger sister of Tommy, are in women's doubles action against Thai pair Puttita Supajirakul and Sapsiree Taerattanachai. Srikanth's match is after this one.

Lin Dan is through after a slight scare. He beats Tein Minh Nguyen 16-21, 21-12, 21-12.

Kidambi Srikanth is set to face Nhat Nguyen in the first round clash.

But before that, Lin Dan lost the first game to Tein Minh Nguyen but has clawed back by winning the second game 21-12. He leads the third 13-6.

- Both Kento Nishimoto and Tommy Sugiarto have easily made their way into the second round. Nishimoto got past Finland's Kalle Koljonen in straight games, 21-11, 21-14 and Sugiarto beat Sri Lanka's Niluka Karunaratne 21-18, 21-12.

- Thailand's Nitchaon Jindapol is through to the second round. The world number 20 eased past Crystal Pan of USA, 21-9, 21-14.

- Meanwhile, Kento Momota eases his way into the second round with a straight-games, 21-9 21-10 victory over Vietnam's Cao Cuong Pham.

21-11 H. S. Prannoy secures the third game against Eetu Heino and progresses to the second round. A resolute effort from the Indian, who has dominated the second and third game after losing the first 17-21.

THIRD GAME.

21-10 A completely dominant second game from H. S. Prannoy, who levels the match 1-1 against Eetu Heino.

11-5 H. S. Prannoy holds a six-point lead at the mid-game break. A strong comeback from the India after losing the first game.

SECOND GAME.

17-21 Eetu Heino takes the first game! H. S. Prannoy's rallies but in vain.

9-11 H. S. Prannoy trails Eetu Heino by two points at the mid-game break.

H. S. Prannoy takes on Eetu Heino in a first-round match.

Khosit Phetpradab of Thailand secures a straight-games, 21-19 21-13 victory over Daren Liew.

Chen Long with a smash at the body of Vladimir Malkov to close out the second game 21-17 and take the match 21-13 21-17.

China's Chen Long, up against Vladimir Malkov of Russia, takes the first game 21-13.

Men's singles results: Guangzu Lu of China beats German Kai Schaefer 21-12 21-15 to progress to the second round. Luis Enrique Penalver beats Maxime Moreels of Belgium 21-15 21-14 in another men's singles first-round match.

More joy for India on Day 1 of the BWF World Championships with the women's doubles pair of Poorvisha S. Ram and Meghana Jakkampudi beating the Corleto Soto-Sotomayor pair 21-10 21-18.

Meanwhile, in a women's singles first-round match, Nitchaon Jindapol of Thailand beats Crystal Pan of the USA in straight games, winning 21-14 21-9.

 

21-16 A smash down the line from Sai Praneeth and he secures a straight-games victory over Jason Anthony Ho Shue to progress to the second round. He wins 21-17 21-16 and gets the job done in 39 minutes.

11-9 A jump smash from Jason Anthony Ho Shue finds the net and Sai Praneeth takes a two-point lead into the mid-game break. The Indian had to dig deep after a blistering start from his Canadian opponent, who benefited from Praneeth's cross-court forehands finding the net and getting him free points early in the game. Praneeth, though, overcame that phase and has the upper hand now.

SECOND GAME.

21-17 Sai Praneeth takes the first game! Jason Anthony Ho-Shue fought back from a five-point deficit and closed the gap to two points. The Indian shuttler, however, rediscovered his early-game mojo to go 1-0 up in the first-round match.

11-7 At the mid-game break, Sai Praneeth holds a comfortable four-point lead. Jason Anthony Ho-Shue hasn't had an answer to Sai Praneeth creating angles and smashing winners, which have been complemented by clever drop shots.

5-5 A very even contest so far. Sai Praneeth has hit a couple of winners in the early stages, while Jason Anthony Ho Shue has been aggressive. A couple of unforced errors have handed Sai Praneeth a few easy points, but he hasn't allowed the Indian to get away.

We're ready! Sai Praneeth will receive from Jason Anthony Ho-Shue to begin the first-round match at BWF World Championships.

Sai Praneeth's match against Jason Anthony Ho-Shue has been pushed back further by five minutes, now scheduled to start at 13:20 IST.

Hee Heo Kwang takes the second game 21-12 and completes a straight-games victory over Milan Ludik.

Rosario Maddaloni provides greater resistance in the second game but goes down 16-21 to Tzu Wei Wang, who progresses to the pre-quarters with a 21-6 21-16 victory.

Meanwhile, Sai Praneeth's match has been pushed back by five minutes and will now start at 13:15 IST.

Hee Heo Kwang wins the first game 21-14 against Milan Ludik. He also leads the second game 11-5.

Tzu Wei Wang has taken the first game 21-6 against Rosario Maddaloni. He's had it all his own way so far.

We're all set for the Championships to get underway. Tzu Wei Wang of Taiwan is up against Rosario Maddaloni of Italy. And in another match, Czech Republic's Milan Ludik is taking on Hee Heo Kwang.

B. Sai Praneeth will begin India's challenge at the World Championships, with the match scheduled to begin at 13:10 IST. He'll play Jason Anthony Ho-Shue in the round of 32.

The Indian contingent is confident of a good show in the World Championships, but Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty withdrawing from the tournament has come as a setback.

P. V. Sindhu and Saina Nehwal, who could face off in the last-four, got a bye in the first round. While Sindhu will open her campaign against either Chinese Taipei’s Pai Yu Po or Bulgaria’s Linda Zetchiri, Saina will take on the winner of the match between Switzerland’s Sabrina Jaquet and Netherland’s Soraya De Visch Eijbergen in the second round.

In the men's singles section, Kidambi Srikanth will open against Nhat Nguyen of Ireland in a repeat of the opening clash of the 2018 edition. Sameer Verma is in the same half as Srikanth and will open against Loh kean Yew of Singapore.

Swiss Open finalist B. Sai Praneeth will face Canada’s Jason Anthony Ho-Shue in the opening round, while H. S. Prannoy’s first-round opponent will be Finland’s Eetu Heino.

The Indian pairs of Manu Attri and B. Sumeeth reddy, M.R. Arjun and Ramchandran Shlok and Arun George and Sanyam Shukla are in the fray in the men's doubles section.

In the women’s doubles, Ashwini Ponnappa and N. Sikki Reddy, Jakkampudi Meghana and Poorvisha S Ram and Pooja Dandu and Sanjana Santosh will also look for a good outing.

The mixed doubles pair of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Sikki too will look to go deep in the tournament when they begin against the English pair of Ben Lane and Jessica Pugh.
