Peter Siddle has agreed a deal with champions Essex that will cover the opening five games of the 2018 County Championship season.

The former Australia bowler, who earned 62 Test caps in an eight-year international career, won the Big Bash League on Sunday, taking 3-17 in Adelaide Strikers' 25-run victory over Hobart Hurricanes.

Siddle, 33, represented Nottinghamshire from 2014 until March this year, ultimately leaving because of a back injury.

"I've enjoyed my previous experiences of county cricket and can't wait to get under way at Chelmsford," Siddle said.

"I have heard very good things about the club, and the quality of the playing squad, and look forward to contributing strongly towards the title defence during the first few weeks of the season."

Siddle took 211 Test wickets for Australia at an average of 29.92, and also appeared for his country in 17 ODIs and two Twenty20s.
