WHAT THEY SAID

Mohammad Shami: "A good start is more important. When the conditions assist you, it is all the better. Hardik asked me whether I wanted to bowl the fourth over. I was the one who asked him to wait."

Hardik Pandya: "Shami got us off to a great start. He has always been doing this. I want to take more responsibility in batting, moving forward. We want to win as a team. We all contributed. Abhinav is a talent to look forward to."

KL Rahul: "I think it was a phenomenal game. What a way to start the campaign. The way we started with the bat wasn't ideal. With a win, it would have been ideal. If anyone can exploit the pitch, it's Shami. I have played with him for three-four years the last franchise and I knew he could be dangerous. It can be difficult with the dew. We need to go back and practise a bit more with the wet ball. Credit to Tewatia and Abhinav as well. Badoni is Baby AB for us. Bats 360-degree and packs a punch."

GUJARAT TITANS INNINGS

GT 161/5 in 19.4 overs: The equation: 11 off 6 balls. Hammered! Abhinav joins the fun with a boundary. Creaaaaamed! Abhinav goes for the cover region next. Three off four required now. Should be a cakewalk. Or a Super Over, maybe? A single next and Tewatia keeps strike. FOUR! That seals the deal. Gujarat comes home in incredible fashion.

GT 148/5 in 19 overs: Abhinav welcomes Chameera back with a timely boundary. Another length ball and the batter has his bottom hand off the bat to extend his reach across the line of the delivery. Another slower one from Chameera and the batters sneak a quick single. Bowled too wide and this has been chipped fine by Tewatia. Would have been a wide but ends up being a four.

GT 139/5 in 18 overs: Launched into outer space! Miller goes past 2000 IPL runs with that six. Miller's gone! A bit of a bobble but Rahul finally manages to hold on to the catch at extra cover. Abhinav nearly ends up chopping on, first ball. Nearly, nearly carries to Badoni at midwicket... Tewatia heaves a sigh of relief!

GT 130/4 in 17 overs: Tewatia has reverse swept Bishnoi into oblivion. Is that the best six of the tournament, thus far? Rahul has a conversation with Bishnoi at length. After two singles and a wide, Tewatia has picked up two back-to-back fours. The fifty-run partnership is up. Bishnoi needs to deploy the googly against Tewatia.

GT 113/4 in 16 overs: Hooda pitches one up and into the slot and Tewatia has slog-swept him into the stands. Tewatia goes downtown next. Four runs. Miller has found the gap on the offside now. Have the floodgates finally opened? Killer Miller is on the loose, ladies and gentlemen. Six runs to end the over with!

GT 91/4 in 15 overs: Bishnoi has been inserted into the attack in order to counter the left-handed Tewatia. Lsg has been good on the field as well except the odd occasion and that has helped a lot in keeping the runs in check. It has been 33 balls since the last boundary was hit.

GT 88/4 in 14 overs: Gujarat needs to put the loose balls away now. Just five off this over. Time for the strategic timeout.

GT 84/4 in 13 overs: Tewatia and Miller continue to resort to singles as the required rate climbs up to 11. The game's poised on a knife-edge now.

GT 79/4 in 12 overs: Hooda to have a go with the ball. Wade, after a patient knock, goes for a wild hoick across the line and Hooda has the Aussie's stumps light up. The game is starting to slip away from Gujarat. However, never dare count Tewatia out.

GT 75/3 in 11 overs: Krunal wins the battle of the brothers. A muted celebration from Krunal as Manish Pandey takes a comfortable catch to dismiss Hardik. Miller comes to the crease.

GT 72/2 in 10 overs: Wade picks up two runs off a full toss before driving elegantly through covers to pick up four more.

GT 64/2 in 9 overs: A comedy of errors in the deep as Chameera and Rajpoot fumble while trying to cut off the ball from reaching the boundary. However, replays suggest they got the job of saving two runs alright. Almost! The ball flies past a diving Bishnoi at midwicket. Four more.

GT 55/2 in 8 overs: The batter will be looking to hit more grounded shots now that the dew is heavily setting in. With ample width on offer, this was always on the cards. Hardik goes for a free swing of the blade as the ball disappears out of sight in no time.

GT 46/2 in 7 overs: Alright, so time for some Pandya vs Pandya. The finger spinner seems to be getting some turn. Only two runs off that over.

GT 44/2 in 6 overs: Spin has been introduced, with google specialist Bishnoi being brought on. He concedes a boundary after bowling three back-to-back dot balls. His legbreak strays wide.

Aveshjpeg
Avesh Khan bowls.

GT 39/2 in 5 overs: Hardik has flicked Avesh through midwicket to pick up a boundary. A loud appeal from Avesh again, this time for Hardik's wicket, and Rahul has been convinced into taking a review. HawkEye shows the impact was outside off.

GT 35/2 in 4 overs: Mohsin Khan bowls one into Hardik's pads and this has been clipped towards deep backward square leg. The ball seems to be skidding on quite nicely. Too short now and Wade has cut this away for four.

GT 25/2 in 3 overs: Knocked him over! A toe-crusher from Chameera ends Shankar's brief stay in the middle. Two slips and a short leg in place for Hardik. The skipper gets off the mark in style, with a boundary, reading Chameera's double bluff. Hardik has pulled the short ball to glory next. Four!

GT 15/1 in 2 overs: Wade gets going with a quick single. An overenthusiastic appeal from Avesh has been turned down by umpire Pathak. Rahul and de Kock consult but decide not to go for the review. A searing yorker but Wade has dug this out well to pick up four runs.

GT 7/1 in 1 over: Gujarat gets underway, courtesy of four leg-byes. Gill misses the flick and the ball takes a piece of the pad before rolling down to the boundary. Gill miscues. The ball goes high... really high, which gives Hooda all the time to settle underneath. Krunal locks him in an embrace. Yes, you've read that right. Decent punch off the backfoot and Shankar, in at 3, is off the mark with a couple of runs.

We're back for the chase. Wade and Gill to open. They'll be up against Sri Lanka pacer Dushmantha Chameera.

INNINGS BREAK

LUCKNOW SUPER GIANTS INNINGS

LSG 158/6 in 20 overs: Aaron to bowl the last over. Strays to register yet another wide. Another fielding gaffe in the deep as Miller shares his thoughts with Tewatia who did not run in from midwicket. Hardik takes a comfortable catch at the edge of the wicket to dismiss Badoni. Krunal finishes off with a single.

LSG 149/5 in 19 overs: An umpire referral for run out as Krunal puts in a dive at full stretch. He is safe. Strangely, Ferguson decides not to throw from close quarters while Krunal was miles away from the crease. Badoni gets to his first T20 fifty in style, swatting a 146kmph delivery into the stands. He is the third youngest Indian to get to a fifty on IPL debut.

LSG 139/5 in 18 overs: Shami to bowl out. Ferguson has put one down at the short boundary on the offside. This has been a poor day for the Kiwi on the field. Shami does Krunal in for pace who swivel pulls anyway. A top-edge rolls down to the fence. Krunal goes for a full flash of the blade and this is a boundary too. Shami errs in length and Badoni has glanced this past square leg for four.

LSG 124/5 in 17 overs: Change of ends for Ferguson. Rashid does well at third man to keep it down to a single. A superb yorker at searing pace next asks tough questions of Krunal, who has just replaced Hooda in the middle. Badoni drills one straight back over the bowler's head for a four.

LSG 116/5 in 16 overs: There is an appeal for Badoni's wicket but umpire Paschim Pathak isn't interested. Badoni joins the party with a massive slog-sweep to bring up yet another cracking maximum. Another appeal and this time Rashid's so confident he signals the 'T' himself. Flat line as the ball goes past the bat, the big screen displays three reds and Hooda is out. Krunal joins Badoni.

LSG 109/4 in 15 overs: Another length ball from Hardik and Hooda turns this into gold. Superb connection, which sails into the crowd. Scooped and scooped fine, Hooda is making the bat talk. Four more. Wait for it... it's another boundary. With the third man in, Hooda has helped the ball on its way. Fireworks all around! 19 comes off the over as the last full ball races away to the fence as well. Quite understandably, the strategic timeout has been called for.

LSG 90/4 in 14 overs: Rashid who? Rashid's the one who has just been dispatched by Hooda into the stands, wide of midwicket. Hooda's fifty is up off 36. What a rescue act this has been, thus far!

LSG 80/4 in 13 overs: Aaron is back into the attack. He hits the deck hard and Hooda just manages to work it past Rashid at point. Swivelled and pulled into the stands for a six next. Hooda is on fire! The partnership goes past fifty as Hooda crunches a half-volley down the ground for four. 17 comes off the over.

LSG 63/4 in 12 overs: An optimistic appeal from Wade. Rashid, however, is unsure. With two reviews left, Hardik goes upstairs. Turns out, the ball had kissed Hooda's glove en route to the 'keeper.

LSG 58/4 in 11 overs: A back-of-length delivery from Hardik has been clobbered to the long-on fence by Hooda. The next ball falls just short of Miller at cover. Hooda playing with fire here. Just lofts a drive over the head of Miller again towards extra cover for four.

LSG 47/4 in 10 overs: Here comes Rashid Khan for the first time in this match. Slip in place. Hooda on strike. Five singles off his first over.

LSG 42/4 in 9 overs: Hardik into his second over. Two dot balls later, Badoni collects a single. Hooda then hits a boundary. Six off the over. Strategic timeout has been taken.

LSG 36/4 in 8 overs: Ferguson continues. Just three off the over. Lot riding on Hooda and Badoni.

Hardik Pandya bowls for the first time in IPL since the 2019 final.

LSG 33/4 in 7 overs: Hardik brings himself on. Just one run off the over. Sharp start from the all-rounder.

LSG 32/4 in 6 overs: Ferguson into the attack. Relentless pressure from Gujarat. Lucknow reeling for now. Tidy over. Just three from it.

LSG 29/4 in 5 overs: Shami in for his third over. Hooda flicks a full length to deep midwicket for three runs. OUT! Bowled him! It nipped in from a length just outside off and through Pandey's defences.Pandey b Mohammed Shami 6(5b 1x4 0x6). Badoni is in at number six. Shami keeps his length on the shorter side to end the over with three dots.

LSG 26/3 in 4 overs: Aaron starts off with a wide down leg. Vijay Shankar puts in an excellent dive at cover point to stop the ball in its tracks next. The third ball goes for a boundary, beating Tewatia in the ring. Gill takes a superb catch running 25.3m in 4.8 seconds, to send Lewis back into the hut. Kept his eyes on the ball and Aaron gets one with the faster delivery. Another misfield and this time it is the captain. Rashid and Hardik give chase but in vain.

LSG 14/2 in 3 overs: Lockie lets a bad bounce through to the rope and instantly raises his hand in apology. Shami is in the middle of a dream spell here. An unplayable inswinger to de Kock goes on to rattle the sticks. Manish Pandey walks in.

LSG 9/1 in 2 overs: Aaron to share the new ball. The third ball drifts into Lewis' pads and all the Trinidadian had to do was help it along its way. The bowler has requested for some sawdust to be sprinkled near the landing area. A single to short fine leg to finish the over.

Shamijpeg

LSG 2/1 in 1 over: The ball moves appreciably as it goes past the bat and Gujarat sniffs something here off the very first ball. Everybody goes up in appeal and Rahul may have to walk here. A long wait for the UltraEdge and there is the spike. OUT! Rahul doesn't look too happy. A flick of the pad, maybe? Nonetheless, the on-field umpire reverses his call. Lewis joins de Kock. The South African batter has a word with Shami after picking up a quick single as the Indian pacer had ended up obstructing his path a bit.

Hardik leads the Titans out in the middle. Rahul and de Kock saunter in as well. Shami will open the bowling. The countdown begins...

WHAT THE CAPTAINS SAID

KL Rahul:  "I think it is pretty straightforward when you play in Wankhede. Everyone wants to bowl first. The dew plays a big part in the second innings but the wicket remains the same throughout the 40 overs. It is our first game and it is important to go out there and enjoy ourselves."

Hardik Pandya: "It's the first game. We want to see how the wicket plays. The dew is a factor. It is always special to play in Wankhede because I have had some amazing memories here. It is a different role, different team but the feeling is same. We are going to give all the guys full freedom to play freely and enjoy. Lockie, Wade, Rashid, and Miller are our four overseas players."

TOSS

Gujarat Titans opts to bowl.

- Hardik Pandya can be seen rolling his arms over. Will he bowl tonight? Sunil Gavaskar reckons if he starts bowling at full throttle, he should become an automatic selection for the T20 World Cup.

PITCH REPORT

"It is a brand new pitch. The pitch has moved two strips across from the first game. One square boundary is just 59 metres, the other is 70 metres. It looks very dry and has lost a lot of grass. Rashid Khan will come into play. The cracks are also starting to open up. Dew will be a factor and captains will love to chase," reckon Graeme Swann and Matthew Hayden .

MATCH PREVIEW

It will be a test of characters for the two captains – K. L. Rahul and Hardik Pandya – when new entrants Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants meet in their opening Indian Premier League (IPL) fixture at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday.

After being an integral part of the Mumbai Indians for seven seasons, Hardik moved on to the Gujarat franchise this year as its skipper. The all-rounder has not played any competitive cricket since last year’s T20 World Cup, and it needs to be seen whether Hardik actually bowls in this edition of the tournament. However, the Gujarat team management admits that it would heavily bank on Hardik – the batter – who has loads of experience from playing at the Wankhede Stadium.

While the Gujarat outfit is expected to field Shubman Gill and stumper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz as the opening pair, a lot will also depend on Rahul Tewatia and Vijay Shankar. The team will look for an all-round show from the two seasoned campaigners and will also bank on the likes of Abhinav Manohar and David Miller.

For Lucknow, the focus will be on Rahul, who joined the franchise after leading Punjab Kings for a couple of seasons. Even though Rahul enjoyed success with the willow, Punjab failed to reach the playoffs on both the seasons. So, this time, the India international will be hoping to make an impact as a captain. The batting department will revolve around him, with Quinton de Kock and Evin Lewis for company.

The middle-order, too, looks solid with the likes of Deepak Hooda, Krunal Pandya, Manish Pandey and Jason Holder.

KLPandyajpg

In the bowling department, Gujarat has a star-studded unit comprising Mohammed Shami and Afghanistan leg spinner Rashid Khan. Lucknow, too, has some incredible performers. In the absence of Mark Wood, Avesh Khan and Ravi Bishnoi will be leading the charge, while Wood’s replacement Andrew Tye could also make an impact.

The opening fixture at the Wankhede Stadium was a low-scoring affair and it would be interesting to see how both the sides handle their team selection and execute the plans.
