Sri Lanka's opener Kusal Mendis was dismissed for 8 in the ninth over. Debutant Udara Jayasundera fell soon after for 1 to leave Sri Lanka struggling at 29 for 2.

Dimuth Karunaratne, after scoring 84, fell to spinner Mitchell Santner. But by this time, Sri Lanka had recovered. They were at 151 for 3.

Dinesh Chandimal played slowly and settled into a fruitful partnership for the third wicket with Dimuth Karunaratne.

Tim Southee gained his first scalp, that of Sri Lanka's captain Angelo Mathews, about 15 overs before stumps. Sri Lanka still trail by 234 runs, with six wickets remaining.
