Manchester United will start its Europa League campaign against Spain’s Real Sociedad on Friday, September 9 at the Old Trafford Stadium in Manchester, England.
Erik Ten Hag’s Man United enjoyed a poor start to the season losing 2-1 and 4-0 to Brighton and Hove Albion and Brentford. However, it has picked up pace recently, winning its last three games on the trot, which included victories against Liverpool and Arsenal. The record 20-time English champion can further increase their recently acquired momentum with a win against Real Sociedad but it will be far from an easy task as Spanish opposition has always troubled United.
Imanol Alguacil’s Real Sociedad has had an inconsistent start to the season. In its four league games, it has won two and lost and drawn a match each. Despite playing against United at Old Trafford, where it will start as the favourite, Real Sociedad will know that the Red Devils will be wary of their opposition with no place for complacency.
Team news
Manchester United: As far as injuries go, Donny van de Beek’s participation remains unclear after the Dutchman missed out on the Arsenal game with an injury. Anthony Martial’s presence remains unclear as well. Phil Jones, Facundo Pellistri, Axel Tuanzebe and Brandon Williams are on the injury list. However, Jones and Williams’ fitness does not matter because they have not been selected for United’s Europa League squad.
Real Sociedad: Real Sociedad’s French centre-back Robin Le Normand is a doubt for the match with a foot injury. Winger Mikel Oyarzabal will be a definite miss as he has already been ruled out until at least next month due to the ACL tear he suffered back in March.
