Comebacks that flopped

Published : Jul 29, 2006 00:00 IST

Not all comebacks have been memorable. Take for instance the attempts by the legendary Muhammad Ali and Bjorn Borg to put the clock back during their second coming. They failed miserably.

Muhammad Ali: The greatest boxer ever, his comeback should have had nightmare prefixed to it. At the age of 38, he was beaten by Larry Holmes, who later revealed that the defeat would have been worse if it wasn't for the respect he had for his idol. If that wasn't enough, Ali later lost to Trevor Berbick, who was 12 years younger than him.

Bjorn Borg: The ice-cool Swede found Spain's Jordi Arrese too hot to handle, as he was beaten in straight sets, when he came back at the age of 34, in Monte Carlo. The wooden rackets did him no good, as he lost to a series of lower-ranked players after that, and then retired for good.
