Playing soccer or cricket and watching movies.

One public figure with whom you would like to play an exhibition table tennis match?

Sachin Tendulkar as he plays table tennis.

Bengali sweets.

A funny incident that happened to you on tour or during your playing days?

When we won the 2006 CWG (Commonwealth Games), the members of the Indian team did anchoring on the news interviews. We thought we could add more insight and we were tired of the regular interviews.

Your prized childhood memory not involving sports?

My father’s trainee gave me a pair of Reebok shoes from the US when I was 12 — my first pair of imported shoes.

Are you currently binge watching any TV show?

No. Normally I watch comedy series like Family Guy and The Big Bang Theory .

Who are your favourite writers?

I should have read some books to know that.

A skill you possess that the world doesn’t know about?

I love to cook.

What is your motto?

When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

What is your current state of mind?

I am mostly content in my head.

On what occasion do you lie?

When I am hanging out with my boys’ gang and getting late to get back home.

When and where are you the happiest?

I am the happiest when I [am] around with my wife and kids. It doesn’t matter which part of the world we are in.

What is your most treasured possession?

My first German Bundesliga team jersey. That was where my career took a strong upward direction.

What is your biggest regret?

When I lost out on the CWG medal in 2014 in both singles and team. I finished fourth in both events.

Favourite holiday destination?

Any place with a beach.

Funniest fan mail or proposal?

When I won the 2006 CWG singles gold, two teenage girls were shouting out to me from the stands: “Will you marry me?”
