Javelin thrower Davinder Singh Kang and quartermiler Sonia Baishya won gold medals in the athletics events of the Asian Games test event in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Sunday.
Davinder was far away from his personal best and was trailing Sri Lankan Sampath Ranasinghe all through the event but a last-round throw of 75.87m brought him the gold.
Meanwhile, West Bengal’s Sonia Baishya, who was lucky to find a place in the Indian team as most of the country’s top quartermilers stayed away from the national camp and hence were not included in the side, won the women’s 400m gold with Karnataka’s Nithya Shree taking silver.
Kerala’s V. Neena and Nayana James, silver and bronze medallists at the Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar last year, won the same medals in the women’s long jump. Jithu Baby took the men’s 400m silver while Tamil Nadu’s Elakkiya Dasan picked a bronze in the men’s 100m.
