Punam Yadav arrived in Varanasi on Friday.

Indian weightlifter Punam Yadav — who won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast — was attacked with bricks and stones by unidentified assailants here on Saturday.

Punam was visiting a relative and the police confirmed that the reason behind the attack is an old land dispute between the athlete’s relative and the neighbouring village head.

Her father, uncle and cousin also faced the wrath when they tried to intervene. Punam informed the cops and extra force arrived at the spot to rescue her.

Punam won gold in the 69kg category — 100kg in the snatch and 122kg in clean and jerk.
