Davis Cupper Yuki Bhambri dismissed Blake Mott of Australia 6-2, 6-0 in the first round of the $50,000 Challenger men’s tennis tournament in China on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old Yuki had won a Futures event in Chandigarh recently, after the Davis Cup venture against New Zealand in Pune. Mott had won the Launceston Challenger last year.
In the pre-quarterfinals, the 341st ranked Yuki, playing the event on an injury ‘protected’ ranking, will face fifth seed Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia, who has won 14 Challenger singles titles and at least one every year since 2009.
In doubles, Yuki and partner Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan will be playing the wild cards Di Wu and Zhizhen Zhang of China in the pre-quarterfinals.
