For the indulgent public at large, to ‘Marathon’ is for reasons varied. Some are in it for the fun and frolic while the others get a measure of their physical limit, and luck willing, end up stretching it perhaps. Whatever the lure is, it isn’t always about going the distance; certainly not for the reward at stake. After all, at the risk of sounding banal, isn’t the purpose of any Marathon to uphold human spirit? At least, that is what the Wipro Chennai Marathon, dubbed the ‘Spirit of Chennai Run’ in its fourth edition, intends to be, come Sunday.

The event, conducted by the Chennai Runners in association with the Wipro Limited, will field a total prize money of Rs. 15 lakh. The 16,000 expected turnout is set to feature some corporate bigwigs among an ensemble of prominent public figures.

The full marathon will commence at 4 a.m. from the Kasturba Nagar MRTS station and cover a distance of 42.2 km while the half marathon will span a distance of 21.2 km and kick off at 4.30 a.m. from the same place. The 10 km run will start at 7 a.m. from the Napier bridge.

Mr. K. Harishankar, Race Director, said that the city’s response to the occasion has been overwhelming. “The response we have received from the city is extremely encouraging. We are grateful to Wipro for supporting us in making the marathon one of the best in the country. We hope to put together a spectacular event this year and live up to the expectation of being one of the most runner-friendly events in the country.”
