BWF World Jr Team C'ship: India to face Malaysia in quarters

India defeated Sweden 3-2 in its final group fixture to finish on top of Group D and book a quarterfinal berth against Malaysia at the BWF World Junior Mixed Team Championships in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on Wednesday.

India defeated Sweden 3-2 in its final group fixture to finish on top of Group D and book a quarterfinal berth against Malaysia at the BWF World Junior Mixed Team Championships in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on Wednesday.

After discarding the challenges of USA, Hungary and Australia without conceding a single match in the process, India looked on course for yet another sweep against Sweden. It won the first three matches to pocket the tie, but conceded the last two matches to finish with a 3-2 scoreline.

With four wins in four ties, India finished on top of Group D and will face third-seeded Malaysia in the quarterfinal on Thursday.

In the first match of the tie against Sweden, Dhruv Kapila and Mithula U K defeated Carl HarrBacka and Tilda Sjoo 21-16, 16-21, 21-15 in the mixed doubles category.

World No. 2 Lakshya Sen proved his billing by taking out Clin Hammarberg 21-11, 21-9 in just 26 minutes to help India build a 2-0 lead. Ashmita Chaliha, ranked No. 207, defeated the higher ranked Ashwathi Pillai (World No. 71) 21-8,21-14 to seal the tie in India's favour.

Krishna Garaga-Dhruv Kapila and Rutaparna Panda-Mithula U.K. lost their respective doubles encounters but India, seeded fifth in the 45-team tournament, had done enough to seal the top spot in the group and book a place in the quarterfinal against Malaysia. Sweden finished second in the group with two wins and two losses.
