China Open: Sindhu, Srikanth enter quarters

In a mixed day for India, P.V. Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth advanced to the quarterfinals of China Open.

Key highlights from Day 3 action of the China Open.

4:27pm: In a mixed day for India at China Open, Srikanth and Sindhu were the bright spots. Both advanced to the quarterfinals after battling it out in their respective matches. That would be all for today with the updates from our side.

4:22pm:  Kidambi Srikanth enters quarterfinal after a hard-fought 21-12, 15-21, 24-22 win over Thailand's Suppanyu Avihingsanon.

4:05pm: Now shifting back to Srikanth's match, where he is playing the deciding game and trailing 13-15. Now the match looks to be in Srikanth's grasp, three points away from making into the quarters.

4:02pm: India's campaign in mixed doubles end as Ponnappa and Satwiksairaj lose their second round match 14-21, 11-21 to Chinese pair of Zheng Siwei and Huang Haqiong.

3:50pm: The match now moves into the decider as Srikanth loses the second game 15-21. On the other hand, Ponnappa and Satwiksairaj are having a tough time and them crashing out looks palpable. The Chinese pair is leading 13-5.

3:43pm: Srikanth is trailing 7-11 at the interval of the second game. The Indian mixed doubles pair has conceded the first game 14-21.

3:36pm: The ideal start, Srikanth would have wanted as he clinches the first game 21-12. Meanwhile, the Chinese pair is proving to be too strong as Ponnappa and Satwiksairaj get a grip on the match from the start.

3:30pm: In a short while from now, Ponnappa and Satwiksairaj will be in action against the Chinese pair of Zheng Siwei and Huang Haqiong.

3:24pm: Kidambi Srikanth is now up against Suppanyu Avihingsanon of Thailand. The world No. 8 is dominating the match with a 16-10 lead in the first game.

1:07pm: Match point for Sindhu and she does it to enter the quarterfinal of China Open. It was nevertheless a closely fought match, which she won 21-23, 21-13, 21-18.

1:01pm: The score now 17-17. Can Sindhu hold her nerves to seal the match? Sindhu now two points away.

12:54pm: Not much of an advantage but surely a mental one with Sindhu having a two-point lead at the interval of the third game. This match is definitely going down to the wire.

12:42pm: Brilliant fight back by Sindhu as the match now moves to the decider game after the Indian ace clinched the second 21-13. Sindhu now seems to have settled into the groove.

12:31pm: The change of sides works for Sindhu as she goes into the break of second game with a 11-6 lead. Manu Attri and Sumeeth reddy too make an exit after losing in straight games 9-21, 10-21.

12:23pm:  P.V. Sindhu goes down fighting 21-23 in the first game against Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand in her pre-quarters match. The doubles pair of Manu and  Sumeeth too have lost the first game 9-21.

12:14pm: In another court, India's men's doubles pair of Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy are in action against Chen Hung Ling and Wang Chi-Lin of Taiwan.

12:08pm: Praanav and Sikki lose 16-21, 10-21 to the Danish pair in the second round. In women's singles, Sindhu is being stretched by the Thai shuttler. Sindhu now does well to claw back into the game by narrowing the deficit to one point.

11:59am: Pranaav Chopra and Sikki Reddy don't look like clawing back into the match as the Danish pair is running away with the match, seven points away from victory.

11:57am: Meanwhile, P.V. Sindhu takes the court for her pre-quarters match against Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan. Stay tuned to this page for updates from both the matches.

11:51am: The Danish pair of Mathias and Christinna shot to an early lead of 5-1 in the second game. At the interval of the game, the Indian duo is trailing 5-11.

11:39am: This is becoming a see-saw first game so far with the scores at 13-13. That's it, the Indian pair concedes the first game 16-21.

11:30am: India's day at the China Open starts with mixed doubles, where Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N. Sikki Reddy are up against Mathias Christiansen and Christinna Pedersen of Denmark. After dominating the start, the Indian pair has now conceded the lead in the first game.

Day 2 review: Indian mixed doubles pairing of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa shocked Commonwealth Games silver medallists England’s Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith to enter the pre-quarterfinals.

World No. 25 Satwiksairaj and Ashwini, who had lost twice to the English combination in the past, executed their plan well to notch up a 21-13, 20-22, 21-17 win in a match that lasted an hour and three minutes.

The Indian pair will now face top seed Chinese combination of Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong.

Seventh seed Kidambi Srikanth was also through to the pre-quarterfinals after beating Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke 21-9, 21-19 to set up a meeting with Thailand’s Suppanyu Avihingsanon.

However, H.S. Prannoy lost his first round match against eighth seed Ng Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong 16-21, 12-21 to make an early exit from the tournament.

The men’s doubles pair of Satwik and Chirag Shetty, also lost 19-21, 20-22 to Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong of Malaysia.

In women's doubles, Ponnappa and N. Sikki Reddy also went down 10-21, 18-21 to Korean combination of Kim So Yeong and Kong Hee Yong.
