Asian silver medallist Deepak Kumar gave a fine account of himself to advance to the second round of the 51kg weight class at the National boxing championships at the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS), Vijaynagar, on Thursday.
Deepak, who had defeated World and Olympic champion Shakhobidin Zoirov on his way to claim the silver medal in 52kg at the 72nd Strandja memorial tournament in February and travelled to Italy as a sparring partner with the Olympics bound Indian side, gave a flawless performance to beat Bihar's Aman Kumar 5-0 in a first round contest.

Deepak, who mostly remained in the shadow of Amit Panghal and got a silver in 49kg in the 2019 Asian championships in Bangkok, had defeated Vijay Zora of Navy in the inter-Services trials to qualify for the Nationals.
Asian bronze medallist Varinder Singh (60kg), former World youth champion Sachin Siwach (54kg) and Strandja bronze medallist in 69kg Naveen Boora (71kg) were among the prominent names who recorded comprehensive wins.
