London Olympics bronze medallist M. C. Mary Kom’s hopes of a berth in the Rio Olympics was over with Ren Cancan of China and Lin Yu-Ting of Chinese Taipei losing in the 51kg quarterfinals of the World women’s boxing championship in Astana, Kazakhstan. The Indian's chances of getting an Olympic quota place depended on Ren Cancan and Lin Yu-Ting ending in the medal bracket.

“The only possibility for Mary Kom to qualify is if number one (Ren Cancan) and number three (Lin Yu-Ting) from the Asian/Oceania Olympic Qualification tournament finish with a medal in Astana (one of the four first places),” said an International Boxing Association (AIBA) communication.

The Chinese handed a walkover to Frenchwoman Sarah Ourahmoune and the Chinese Taipei boxer lost to London Olympics gold medallist Nicola Adams of Great Britain in the quarterfinals. Incidentally, Adams had defeated Mary Kom 11-6 in the semifinal bout at the London Olympics.
