Darshan Gupta passes away

The capital’s well-known chess organiser and coach Darshan Kumar Gupta passed away following a cardiac arrest here on Tuesday. He was 64.

Gupta, popularly known in the chess circle as 'DK', was cremated at the Sant Nagar cremation ground in Central Delhi on Wednesday morning. His son Kapil Gupta, also a former chess player, performed the last rites.

Besides the bereaved family members, a large number of well-wishers, chess players and officials of the Delhi Chess Association (DCA) were present.

Admired widely for his awe-inspiring passion for the cerebral sport, Gupta was also the editor of Chess India magazine. He organised several chess events including Viswanathan Anand’s simultaneous display for NIIT in the Capital and in Jaipur.

He was a chess coach at K. R. Mangalam World School, Greater Kailash I and Sadhu Vaswani International School for Girls, Shanti Niketan.
