Ashwin named ICC Cricketer of the Year

Ravichandran Ashwin, who had a stellar year with the bat and ball, was named the Cricketer of the Year and the Test cricketer of the Year. In Tests, he picked up 48 wickets and scored 336 runs in eight Tests with two hundreds from 14 September 2015 to 20 September 2016 -- the voting period for the award.

Ravichandran Ashwin became the third Indian after Rahul Dravid (2004) and Sachin Tendulkar (2010) to win the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy after being named the International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricketer of the Year 2016.

The World No. 1 off-spinner was also named the Test Cricketer of the Year. He picked up 48 wickets and scored 336 runs in eight Tests with two hundreds from 14 September 2015 to 20 September 2016 - the voting period for the award. He was also the lone Indian to be featured in the ICC Test XI.

South Africa's Quinton de Kock was named the ODI Cricketer of the Year. Suzie Bates of New Zealand won both the Women's ODI Cricketer of the Year and Women's T20 Cricketer of the Year awards.

"It’s an absolute pleasure to be awarded with this great honour," said Ashwin after the awards were announced, "It feels great to follow the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid in being named as the ICC Cricketer of the Year. To also win the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year makes it even better."

He dedicated the award to his family and thanked the ICC and his team for the success.

"We’ve had a great transition ever since Mahendra Singh Dhoni hung up his boots. A young captain has taken over, we fell on the right track, and we now have a new bunch of boys," said he.

Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh was named the Emerging Player of the Year while Afghanistan's Mohammad Shahzad was named Associate/Affiliate Cricketer of the Year .
