Australia on brink of series sweep after Boland wrecks Windies

Having declared their first innings on 511-7 on Friday, Australia bundled out West Indies for 214 to claim a massive lead of 297. They then raced to 199-6 in 31 overs, effectively batting West Indies out of the contest.

Australia set West Indies a monumental victory target of 497 and then reduced them to 38-4 on day three of the day-night second test to be on the verge of a 2-0 series sweep on Saturday.

Having declared their first innings on 511-7 on Friday, Australia bundled out West Indies for 214 to claim a massive lead of 297.

The hosts then raced to 199-6 in 31 overs, effectively batting West Indies out of the contest, before declaring their second innings.

Scott Boland then struck three blows in his first over to rattle West Indies who are 459 runs behind staring at a huge defeat inside four days.

Both Devon Thomas and Jason Holder were batting on eight at stumps after a frenetic 85-over day when 349 runs were scored and 16 wickets tumbled at the Adelaide oval.

After resuming on 102-4, West Indies were bowled out in the extended first session and it began with Tagenarine Chanderpaul’s (47) run out in the first over the of the day.

Chanderpaul defended a ball from Mitchell Starc, set on a quick single and was sent back. Starc picked the ball and threw down stumps with a diving Chanderpaul marginally short of ground.

In his next over, Starc had Holder caught behind for a four-bal duck.

Joshua Da Silva made 23 and Roston Chase (34) added 43 runs with Marquino Mindley to take West Indies past the 200-mark before they were all out.

Nathan Lyon picked 3-57 for Australia who fielded a depleted attack sans skipper Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood -- both recovering from injuries.

Australia were predictably aggressive when they came out to begin their second innings.

Usman Khawaja (45) added 77 runs with David Warner (28) before Roston Chase removed both.

Marnus Labuschagne made 31, his first sub-100 score of the series, while stand-in captain Steve Smith (35) and Travis Head (38 not out) also produced breezy cameos.

Scott Boland ripped the heart out of the West Indies top order claiming three wickets in his first over.

He dismissed West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite caught behind with his first delivery, trapped Shamarh Brooks lbw with his third, and had Jermaine Blackwood caught in gully with his sixth.

Starc dismissed Chanderpaul caught behind for 17 and Australia would be hoping to wrap up victory early on Sunday.
