Michael Clarke has joined an elite group of cricket greats to be made an honorary life member of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). The ex-Australia captain joins his former team-mates Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Ricky Ponting as a lifetime member of the MCC.
Classy batsman Clarke scored 8,643 runs in 115 Tests, making 28 centuries and averaging a magnificent 49.10 in the longest format. The 35-year-old, who retired from international cricket following the Ashes defeat in England last year, also averaged 44.58 in a one-day international career which he made 245 appearances.
Clarke said: "This is a fantastic honour and I am delighted to become an MCC Honorary Life Member. MCC is the most prestigious cricket club in the world and to be invited to become a member is a great privilege.
"Lord's has always been a very special place to play cricket, and I've got some great memories of playing there so I'm really looking forward to coming back as a Member of MCC."
John Stephenson, MCC head of cricket, said: "Michael was a fantastic servant to Australian cricket and has a brilliant record in Test match and ODI cricket."
