Martin Guptill made Twenty20 international history on Friday with a stunning century in New Zealand's tri-series match with Australia.

Guptill struck 105 off 54 balls at Eden Park, an innings that saw him surpass compatriot Brendon McCullum as the leading run-scorer in T20Is.

He now has 2,188 runs to his name, while McCullum - who called time on his international career in 2016 - has 2,140. India's Virat Kohli is third on the list with 1,956.

In addition, Guptill's century was brought up in 49 balls to mark the fastest by a New Zealander, breaking another record set by the former captain.

McCullum scored 100 off 50 balls against Australia in a tied T20I match in Christchurch in 2010.

He congratulated Guptill on Twitter, writing: "Brilliant and well deserved from @Martyguptill!! Top of the T20 runs leaderboard and a whole lot more to add over the coming years! Keep swinging."
