R. Ashwin tries to cross Australian batsman Matt Renshaw during the first day of the third Test in Ranchi on Thursday.

Australian opener Matt Renshaw, who made a pleasing 44 here on Thursday, said, “We probably would have liked to have scored a few more runs in the top-order but I thought we all probably got a good start but just didn’t get on with it and make a big score like Steve (Smith) did. I think he showed us how to go today.”

On an Indian team without Kohli in the second half of the day, he said, “They still came out pretty hard, but I think there probably weren’t as many words out there today. They still made it tough for us.”

Asked about Glenn Maxwell’s innings, Renshaw said, “He’s a class player and showed us what he can do in Test cricket today.”

The Aussie opener noted, “The first session tomorrow is a really big one. If we win that one that we go a long way in winning the match.”
