Virat Kohli and Dinesh Karthik walked out in the middle with India needing 84 runs to win and five wickets in hand. But James Anderson removed Karthik in the first over of Day 4 to put India on backfoot.
After making a blistering 149 in the first innings, Virat Kohli reached his fifty in 88 balls to keep India in the hunt.
But Ben Stokes extinguished India's hopes when he got Kohli for an LBW. Kohli opted for the DRS, but it was all in vain as the delivery was hitting the leg stump, prompting jubilant celebrations from Joe Root.
India was eight down in the same over as Stokes removed Mohammad Shami in the same over to inch England closer to a win.
Hardik Pandya tried to bring India closer to the target, but he was the last man to fall after being caught in the slips by Alastair Cook off Stokes, thus handing England a 31-run win.
England celebrate its victory after staring at a possible defeat for close to three sessions.
All-rounder Sam Curran was rightly awarded the Man of the Match for his five wickets and an invaluable 64 in England's second innings.
