Lasith Malinga featured in Mumbai Indians’ Indian Premier League (IPL) fixture against Chennai Super Kings and scalped three wickets, giving away 34 runs in a 37-run victory. But soon after the match, Malinga left for Kandy to play Sri Lanka's Super Provincial One Day tournament.
And on Thursday, Malinga scalped seven wickets for 49 runs to help Galle beat Kandy by 156 runs. Put in to bat, Galle scored 255 runs in 50 overs. In reply, Kandy was bundled out for just 99 runs.
These matches will be important for Malinga, who is eyeing to be the Sri Lankan captain, as the national squad for the World Cup will be announced post this tournament.

Sri Lanka’s chief national selector, Ashantha de Mel, was impressed with Malinga’s dedication. “It is tremendous. It shows the kind of dedication he has. He travelled straight to Kandy from Mumbai and reached at 4 o’clock in the morning. Despite that, he bowled 10 overs and got seven wickets,” de Mel told Sportstar .
Malinga will miss the next few games for Mumbai Indians and could return to the IPL after the Provincial tournament gets over on April 11.
