WHAT THEY SAID

Mukesh Choudhary: I never thought I'd make cricket my career. Was at boarding school, used to play every sport. Wasn't that good in studies, so thought of playing cricket. I have to bowl three overs in the PowerPlay.

Ravindra Jadeja: We were very tensed but we know we had the greatest finisher of the game with us. Mukesh has bowled well upfront and done well for us in the PowerPlay. I never take fielding for granted and practise hard. We need to work on our fielding and can't afford to drop catches.

Rohit Sharma:  "In the end it was a great fight from us. We were right in the game. In the end, we all know how calming MS Dhoni can be and he took them home. If you lose three or a couple of wickets up front, it's always going to be tough. But in the end we got to a very reasonable target where we thought with the ball we could put them under pressure. I thought till the last over, we had them under pressure. We want to back ourselves with the ball. Whatever we have in front of us, we back ourselves to defend it. The pitch was good."

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS INNINGS

MI 156/7 in 20 overs: Equation - 17 runs, 6 balls. Unadkat's piercing yorker cramps Pretorius for room. Bruce Oxenford turns down the LBW appeal but MI goes upstairs. Three reds. Out he is. Bravo joins Dhoni. Finisher Dhoni enters the stage. SIX STRAIGHT DOWN THE GROUND! Four more. Dug in short and Dhoni swivel-pulls. Six off two required. Dhoni takes a couple. 4 runs. 1 ball.  HE'S DONE IT!!! Dhoni digs the yorker to short fine, stunning DY Patil into silence.

MI 139/6 in 19 overs: Bumrah to bowl in the penultimate over. Sams puts in a dive but fails to intercept as the ball runs down to the fence. Pretorius scoops it fine. Four runs.

MI 128/6 in 18 overs: Pretorius has glanced one bowled into the pads into the night sky. SIX. Dhoni slashes a widish, fuller delivery from Unadkat towards point for four.

MI 114/6 in 17 overs: Bumrah starts off with a wide. Dhoni pushes for a quick single with the required run-rate touching 12.00. Two back-to-back yorkers which Dhoni and Pretorius manage to jam out.

MI 108/6 in 16 overs: Dhoni gets a single with a push down long-on. Wide. Tilak slips, stumbles but holds on. Jadeja's a goner. Mumbai sniffing a win? Pretorius is in.

MI 103/5 in 15 overs: A fine effort from Suryakumar in the deep sees MI save three runs for his side. Pollard has his moment! The big man pounces forward at long-off to end Rayudu's stay in the middle. MS Dhoni walks in. The game is afoot.

MI 98/4 in 14 overs: Shokeen to bowl out. A misfield from Meredith sees the ball roll down to the rope. Wide. The Delhi off-spinner finishes with an impressive economy of 5.75 in his maiden IPL game.

MI 88/4 in 13 overs: Rayudu greets Sams' short ball with a maximum. Another slower bouncer and this time Sams is lucky he got away with that. Dube gets two. Ishan pulls off an airborne stunner behind the sticks to send Dube back into the hut. Time for the timeout.

MI 79/3 in 12 overs: Shokeen comes back with yet another economical over. Only two off the over.

MI 77/3 in 11 overs: Dube welcomes Riley with a six down long-on. Stays rooted to his crease and drives this over.

MI 68/3 in 10 overs: Dube comes to the crease. Only two singles off Shokeen's second over.

MI 66/3 in 9 overs: After three singles, Unadkat's fourth has been called a wide for height. Rayudu gets a boundary. Superb placement through the gap at sweeper cover. Rohit has a shy at the stumps and Rayudu would have been walking if the Mumbai skipper would have managed to get the Zings to light up. However, Mumbai wouldn't mind as Uthappa is gone off the very next ball, right after putting up a fifty-run stand with Rayudu. Brevis at deep square legs snaffles one up comfortably.

MI 57/2 in 8 overs: Shokeen to bowl his very first over in the IPL. AND HE HAS HIS VERY FIRST WICKET!  Played right back to the bowler, has Shokeen grassed this? The closest of calls. The TV replays from different angles aren't looking too convincing. It has been given not out but Rohit thinks they have been hard done by. There are no soft signals. Uthappa celebrates the reprieve with a mammoth hit straight down the ground.

MI 48/2 in 7 overs: Meredith starts off with four dots. Rayudu finally taps a good length ball to cover for one. Uthappa picks up a single as well.

MI 46/2 in 6 overs: Unadkat is bowling the hard lengths to ask tough questions of Rayudu and Uthappa. Uthappa bludgeons one into the sightscreen. Monstrous maximum to end the over. The umpire taps his watch. Time for the strategic break.

MI 38/2 in 5 overs: Meredith to bowl his first. Almost gets a wicket with a fuller delivery. Uthappa, tempted to drill this wide of point, almost holes out to a diving Tilak. Through cover again. Four!

MI 29/2 in 4 overs: Uthappa clips one off his pads to register a leg-bye. Hooked over fine leg, has Rayudu to get another maximum.

MI 22/2 in 3 overs: Santner top-edges and Sams has his second! Unadkat settles underneath. Rayudu tees off with a six to fine leg.

MI 15/1 in 2 overs: Bumrah to share the new ball in his 200th T20 game. The second delivery is a wide down leg. Six off that over.

MI 9/1 in 1 over: Game on! Ruturaj scythes one straight to Tilak at point. Sams strikes first ball. Santner is in at 3. A surprising choice. Santner picks the gap on the offside to get a boundary. Pulled through mid-on next for four more.

Ruturaj and Uthappa saunter in. Sams has the new ball in hand.

MUMBAI INDIANS INNINGS

MI 155/7 in 20 overs: Bravo starts off with a wide. Unadkat gets an edge that rolls down to the third man fence. The Saurashtra skipper registers a cracking maximum next. Doesn't really middle the pull but it has enough on it to sail into the stands. Two off the final ball as CSK puts up 99 in the back 10.

MI 139/7 in 19 overs: Tilak goes downtown off the very first ball to move within three of his fifty! Gets to the mark off 42 balls. Fifth drop of the day as Dube drops a dolly now. Unadkat heaves a sigh of relief.

MI 126/7 in 18 overs: Sams has been trapped plumb in front. MI decides to go for the DRS but in vain. The original decision stands. This is Bravo's 150th wicket in yellow. Unadkat walks in. Tilak swerves to send the ball down fine leg. Four.

MI 119/6 in 17 overs: Theekshana to bowl out. Pollard holes out to Dube at a straightish long-on. Not the first time he has fallen to this kind of a field setup. Sams opens his account with a four.

MI 110/5 in 16 overs: Bravo, looking to fire in a yorker, strays down leg. Wide. Bravo fires in a yorker into Tilak's pads. Leg-bye has been signaled. Tilak works a slot ball over extra cover for four. Another leg-bye to end the over.

MI 100/5 in 15 overs: Theekshana replaces Jadeja. Starts off with the carrom ball off which Pollard picks up a single. Pollard connects and this has been launched right into outer space! 94m. Mumbai enters the three digits.

MI 89/5 in 14 overs: Bravo and Uthappa combine to finally get CSK the wicket it was looking for. Shokeen just cannot keep riding his luck forever. Miscues to mid-off. The umpire signals it is time for the strategic break before Pollard, who announced his international retirement yesterday, comes on. Pollard opens the face of his bat to guide the ball through third man and get four off the very first ball.

MI 84/4 in 13 overs: Shokeen finds the gap at deep extra cover. This is stylish batting by the Delhi all-rounder.

MI 74/4 in 12 overs: Santner starts off with a short ball. Shokh\een swivel pulls to hammer this into the fence. JADEJA HAS DROPPED ANOTHER SITTER. Yes, you've read that right. Kind of mirrors the kind of season CSK is having.

MI 69/4 in 11 overs: Tilak gets down on one knee to fetch Mumbai the much-needed boundary off Jadeja's bowling. Shokeen, meanwhile, craftily guides a widish delivery past the first slip and down third man for four.

MI 56/4 in 10 overs: Pretorius is altering his pace with each delivery. Tilak and Shokeen continue to keep the scoreboard ticking with risk-free strokes.

MI 52/4 in 9 overs: Jadeja continues. Shokeen has walked out ahead of Pollard here. Interesting choice. Meanwhile, Jaddu has slipped in another quiet over - three off it. Time for the strategic timeout.

MI 49/4 in 8 overs: Santner is back into the attack. GONE! Suryakumar Yadav holes out. Big wicket. MI slip further. Debutant Hrithik Shokeen comes to the crease. Tidy from Santner, three runs and a wicket.

MI 46/3 in 7 overs: Ravindra Jadeja comes into the attack. Just four from the over.

MI 42/3 in 6 overs: Theekshana. Suryakumar Yadav sweeps handsomely for six. Good comeback from the Lankan. Five off the next four.

MI 31/3 in 5 overs: Mukesh could've had a fourth here. But Tilak has been dropped on 2 by Bravo at first slip. What's worse, CSK concedes a boundary. Brilliant from Mukesh. Just four off the fifth over.

MI 27/3 in 4 overs: Time for some off-spin. Theekshana into the attack. A decent over, this, with only four singles coming off it.

MI 23/3 in 3 overs: Through the covers... Suryakumar goes for the elegant drive again. Four more. Surya and Brevis manage to run three as the former punches one across midwicket. Mukesh's third! The pacer is breathing fire... The easiest of nicks carry to Dhoni behind the sticks. Brevis walks.

MI 14/2 in 2 overs: Beaten! Santner manages to get one to sneak under Suryakumar's blade. Dhoni, blinded by Suryakumar, misses a stumping opportunity. Four! SKY has creamed one through extra cover. Jadeja drops Brevis on 2. A sitter.

MI 6/2 in 1 over: Mukesh starts off with a toe-crusher which Rohit just manages to dig out. Gone! Rohit perishes for nought. An inswinging length ball and Rohit just pokes it to Santner at mid-on. Brevis replaces his skipper at the crease. CSK decides not to go for a review for caught behind after a vociferous appeal. The giant screen shows no spike. Another searing yorker sees the back of of Kishan... Castled for a golden duck. This is bad news for Mumbai. SKY is in way too early. He gets off the mark straightaway with a boundary.

Rohit and Ishan to open the batting. Mukesh to get things rolling for Chennai. Let's play!

MI vs CSK PLAYING XI

Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma (c), Ishan Kishan (wk), Dewald Brevis, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Kieron Pollard, Daniel Sams, Hrithik Shokeen, Riley Meredith, Jaydev Unadkat, Jasprit Bumrah

Chennai Super Kings: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Robin Uthappa, Ambati Rayudu, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja (c), MS Dhoni (wk), Dwaine Pretorius, Dwayne Bravo, Mitchell Santner, Maheesh Theekshana, Mukesh Choudhary

WHAT THE CAPTAINS SAID

Rohit Sharma: The surfaces have changed a bit. The teams have won batting first here in the last 3-4 games. We have made three changes. Riley Meredith is making his debut for Mumbai, Hrithik Shokeen is an off-spinner and making his debut, Daniel Sams comes back. We will see if we can find the right balance. There's a bit of bounce. We are trying to keep things as simple as possible and not complicate them.

Ravindra Jadeja:  We are going to bowl first. The wicket looks a bit damp and we want to take advantage of that. It might spin a bit initially and the dew might come in the second half. Pretorius and Santner replace Moeen and Jordan.

MI vs CSK PITCH REPORT

"The dimensions are 73 meters on one side and 77 on the other, we are pretty much smack bang centre of this venue. This pitch was used early on in the tournament where Punjab Kings belted RCB in a huge chase. Expect lots of runs. It is a little dry, nice and hard, and has plenty of grass on it but the big question will be whether the captain that wins the toss bats first," reckons Matthew Hayden.

MI vs CSK MATCH PREVIEW

Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians - the two heavyweights of IPL with nine titles between them - find themselves languishing at the bottom of the points table as they face off at the DY Patil Stadium on Thursday.

While Mumbai succumbed to its sixth consecutive defeat against Lucknow Super Giants and registered its longest losing streak, Chennai smelt victory but lost the scent against Gujarat Titans.

A misfiring top order and profligacy with the ball in the death overs have plagued both sides. Ishan Kishan has managed 56 runs in his last four innings while MI skipper Rohit Sharma has failed to convert brisk starts into big scores, scoring 114 runs in six innings.

Ruturaj Gaikwad was back among runs against Gujarat after scoring 35 runs in the first five matches but will need to provide consistent support to the in-form Robin Uthappa. The number three slot has been a worry for CSK, with Moeen Ali scoring 87 runs in five innings.

Chris Jordan's 25-run 18th over sank CSK against Titans, while MI's Tymal Mills leaked 21 runs in the 19th which proved to be decisive against LSG. Mumbai's economy rate of 13.30 in the death overs is the worst this season while CSK has gone at 11.89 during this period.

Shivam Dube, whose 46-ball unbeaten 95 against Royal Challengers Bangalore gave CSK its solitary win, will be the key player to watch out for. Mumbai will bank on Suryakumar Yadav, its leading run-scorer in IPL 2022.
