Hello and welcome to Sportstar's Highlights of the Rajasthan Royals vs Sunrisers Hyderabad IPL 2022 match from the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

RAJASTHAN ROYALS BEAT SUNRISERS HYDERABAD BY 61 RUNS

PLAYER OF THE MATCH: SANJU SAMSON (55/27)

WHAT THE CAPTAINS SAID

Sanju Samson: I think it was a different wicket than what we thought. The wicket was helping the fast bowlers if you hit the typical Test match length. Happy to contribute to the team's victory. I worked on my fitness. I chose the right scoring oppurtunities and tried to spend time at the wicket. Leaders like (Kumar) Sangakkara help me a lot. A lot of cricketing brains have gone in to pick the right side. This season we have come in with great dreams. Our owners take great care of us. Lot of good sides and we will take one game at a time.

Kane Williamson: We started beautifully with the ball. We had our opportunities. In all the games so far, there has been some swing and assistance with the new ball. You want to make some inroads. We looked very likely but unfortunately some fine margins in this game didn't go our way. It was a very good surface. Rajasthan played outstandingly well.

For us, there's still a number of things to touch on and improve on as a side. You got to keep your chin up and move on to the next one. It (no-balls) is not something common to us. It was a surprise in a lot of ways and we certainly don't want to do that moving forward. When you take a wicket off a no-ball, it's never nice. It's important for us to look at areas where we can improve.

(On Umran Malik) Incredibly exciting. He's got that raw pace. Hopefully he continues to evolve as a cricketer. He's young and got some experience last year which was really valuable and I'm sure he'll continue to get better. For us as a side and as a young team, we want to make sure that we stay engaged throughout, be nice and clear on what we're trying to execute. With the bat, it was tough. The ball moved early on. We needed to navigate that as well as we could. Today wasn't our day.

SUNRISERS HYDERABAD 149/7 IN 20 OVERS

SRH 149/7 in 20 overs: Coulter-Nile will bowl the last over of the match. Full-toss over the waist and it's called a no-ball. Coulter-Nile is walking away after picking up a niggle and Parag will complete the over for him. Bhuvneshwar muscles the ball across the line and hands a catch at long on but it's free-hit. Markram returns strike with a single. Bhuvneshwar clears his front leg and launches this over the infield on the leg for one more. FOUR! Markram turns a full one away for a boundary through mid wicket and brings up his fifty in 39 balls. Quite the lone battle today! SIX! This is slog-swept over mid wicket for a maximum. Wild swing and a miss outside off by Shepherd. OUT! Shepherd sweeps and ends up playing completely around the ball. Clean bowled. Third one for Chahal and his 250th wicket in T20s. SIX! On the leg side again, waist high, and Shepherd pulls a flat six over square leg.

SRH 55/5 in 13 overs: A skiddy leg break from Chahal and Markram launches it over cover. Coulter-Nile runs in from the deep but puts in the dive too early and misses the catch. Shepherd collects a couple and single. FOUR! Rare loose ball, dug in short and Markram hangs back and cuts it through the covers for a boundary.

SRH 44/5 in 12 overs: Ashwin will continue to turn the screws from the other end. Three singles and a brace make it five runs from the over.

SRH 39/5 in 11 overs: Chahal to bowl. OUT! Samad goes. He tried to lift this full delivery on off over mid wicket but didn't middle it and handed a skier in the deep. Abdul Samad c Riyan Parag b Yuzvendra Chahal 4(4b 0x4 0x6). Romario Shepherd is in and he starts off with sweep for one. Markram collects one more from the over.

SRH 36/4 in 10 overs: Ashwin will continue. On the money to Samad and he defends back to the bowler. He taps the next one to point and hares for one. Down leg side and called wide. Good save by Samson behind the stumps. FOUR! Length outside off and Markram pulls this one over mid wicket and to the fence. It didn't go off the middle of the bat but enough power behind it. Sharp away movement last ball and it goes off the splice and to point for one.

SRH 14/3 in 6 overs: Down leg side, Abhishek misses the flick and Samson appeals half-heartedly for caught behind. It brushed off the pad because it is not called wide. Four more dot balls follow. Abhishek finally gets a single with a dab to third man. Dot to end the PowerPlay as extra bounce beats Markram outside off.

SRH 13/3 in 5 overs: Boult continues. Full on the pads to Abhishek and he flicks it away to fine for one. Pooran is clueless in the channel area from the over the wicket angle too and swings and misses off two consecutive balls. This one is angling down leg and called wide. Rahul Tripathi c Sanju Samson b Prasidh Krishna 0(3b 0x4 0x6). Pooran is in and is beaten first ball with one that nips in from outside off. The angle from across has Pooran feeling uncomfortable in the channel on the off. Five dots to end the over and a wicket maiden for Prasidh.

Beaten! Beaten with the in-swinger this time.

Short and angling across; Abhishek cannot encash on the width and misses the cut outside off. Single behind the keeper. OUT! Williamson edges behind, Samson fumbles and first slip dives in to cover up for the skipper. Umpire wants to check if it was pouched safely. Third umpire confirms it is out. Kane Williamson c Devdutt Padikkal b Prasidh Krishna 2(7b 0x4 0x6). Rahul Tripathi is in at number three. Tripathi steps out and Prasidh drags his length back in response and it blazes past the batter's head.

SRH 2/0 in 1 over: Trent Boult has the new ball. Abhishek Sharma and Kane Williamson to open the innings for SRH. Loud LBW appeal first ball and turned down. Boult nipped it into Williamson from a length and rapped him high on the pad. Beaten! This one goes with the angle from across and misses Williamson's poke outside off. Tucked away to square leg for a couple. Beaten! Angling across to Williamson and he is beaten again outside off. Fuller and straighter on middle and Williamson defends with his foot forward. Boult beats Williamson again outside off to end the over.

Back for the run-chase.  A huge task ahead for Sunrisers, who will need to score a mammoth 211 against the likes of Boult, Ashwin and Chahal.

MATCH PREVIEW

It will be the first Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 game outside the Mumbai metropolitan region. It will also be the last of the opening round games.

As Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals drive down the Mumbai-Pune Expressway en route the Maharashtra Cricket Association International Stadium on the outskirts of the education capital, both the teams will be hoping for a change of fortunes after a forgettable last season.

After occupying the last two slots in the points table in the 2021 edition, both the outfits preferred to alter its combination a great deal in the player auction.

Besides the addition of Devdutt Padikkal to its top order, Rajasthan Royals has created a bowling ensemble that could be as potent as any other T20 attack, not just in IPL but across the globe. With spin twins of R. Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal joining the pace combine of Trent Boult and promising Prasidh Krishna, despite the fifth bowling option likely to emerge as a slight chink in its armour, it will take a real special effort for any batting line-up to dominate the Royals bowlers.

The Sunrisers will thus be looking forward to Nicholas Pooran and Rahul Tripathi, two of its big-ticket acquisitions, to do the needful with the bat along with captain Kane Williamson. Tripathi, the star of Knight Riders’ turnaround in IPL 2021, representing Maharashtra in domestic circuit, will be critical in the opening game since he will be playing at his home ground.

While the Royals will be hoping for its death-bowling options to come good, the Sunrisers will have no dearth in options as long as Bhuvneshwar Kumar and T. Natarajan are fit. It will be interesting to see whether Umran Malik can translate his raw pace into consistent wicket-taking spree starting Tuesday.

If he can be the chief wicket-taker, Sunrisers will not only hope to not miss Rashid Khan but also start off its campaign on a winning note.
