After that early setback, Sri Lanka's wickets fell regularly via Southee and Neil Wagner.
Milinda Siriwardana, the No. 7, provided resistance with a knock of 35, which included five fours and a six. He engaged in a productive partnership of 43 with Rangana Herath.
After New Zealand took a first-innings lead of 137 runs, their two openers Tom Latham (in picture) and Martin Guptill put on 79 runs together. Latham was unbeaten on 72 at stumps.
Rangana Herath broke the stand, claiming Martin Guptill for 46.
Kane Williamson, at No. 3, was unbeaten on 48 at stumps. En route, he completed 1000 runs in the year. New Zealand were ambling at 171 for 1, leading by 308 runs.
