England all-rounder Ben Stokes will hope to recover in time for the Test series against Pakistan in July.

Ben Stokes underwent knee surgery on Tuesday and the England all-rounder must wait to discover how long he is expected to be out of action. Stokes tore the cartilage in his right knee during England's crushing >victory against Sri Lanka in the first Test at Headingley last week.

The 24-year-old revealed on Monday he will miss the rest of the three-match series. It was confirmed on Tuesday that Stokes, who was >replaced in the squad by Chris Woakes , has gone under the knife and will now be hoping to recover in time for the Test series against Pakistan - which starts on July 14.

A short statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said: "Durham and England all-rounder Ben Stokes has undergone surgery this afternoon to address a cartilage tear in his left knee. Full details on the length of his rehabilitation will be confirmed in due course."

The ECB also revealed limited-overs international Reece Topley will be out for three months due to a partial stress fracture of the lumbar spine. There was more positive news of all-rounder David Willey (abdominal muscle tear), who is set to make his return for Yorkshire next week, while paceman Mark Wood is making good progress in his recovery from ankle surgery.
