Post match comments

FC Goa coach Juan Ferrando: "Today for us was a difficult moment because it was not only about 3-0 but our performance. Totally disappointed. After 20 minutes our plan was completely out....firstly it is my plan to try and find the mistakes and help the mentality of the team. Our performance was not good and it is important to change some details."

Mumbai City FC coach Des Buckingham: "We have tried not to try to change too much and just try and do what the club achieved under Sergio during last season. We have just tried to evolve and hopefully, that has started tonight......we would like to see the continuation of the playing style."

FULL-TIME!! (Mumbai City FC 3-0 FC Goa)

90+3' FC Goa has conceded 17 fouls in this match- a horrible night in every sense.

90+1' FC Goa will lose its opening game of the ISL for the first time in the competition's history.

FOUR ADDITIONAL MINUTES!!

88' SHOT- Bedia shoots from distance but the ball kept rising and was nowhere near the target.

86' FC Goa trying to find an opening by creating pressure around Mumbai's penalty-area but the Mumbai defence kept their shape. Fall finally clears the ball after Bedia's heavy touch.

84' BOOKING- Sanson becomes the latest Goa player to see yellow for his challenge on Vikram. It has not been a good night for the Gaurs.

82' CHANCE- Bipin with a great chance to make it four for Mumbai. He ball spun and landed in front of him. He had enough time and space to slot it past Dheeraj but the winger shoots wide.

80' SHOT- Devendra Murgaonkar launches one from distance. It is hard and low but Nawaz gets down in time to make a good save.

78' BOOKING- FC Goa skipper Edu Bedia sees yellow.

76' GOOOOOAAAALLLLLL!!!! YGOR CATATAU SCORES WITH HIS FIRST TOUCH ON HIS MCFC DEBUT!!! What a start by the Brazilian. The player has headed in his first goal in the first minute with his first touch on his Mumbai City FC debut. Talk about making an impact.

75' FCG SUBS- Princeton Rebello and Seriton Fernandes replace Glan and Leander.

73' MCFC SUBS- Ygor Catatau, Rowllin Borges and Mehtab Singh replace Cassio, Apuia and Ranawade.

72' A nice attempt by Ortiz as he slips a pass to Naorem, who had made a well-timed run. However, his touch let him down as he lost possession of the ball.

68' SHOT- Ortiz opens his body up and tries to curl a shot into Nawaz's far-post but the ball is slightly off target. FC Goa did well to create the chance with Naorem heavily involved.

67' CHANCE- A lovely switch by Glan to find Leander. The defender had a good touch with his chest and surged forward but his touch after that was too heavy, which allowed Nawaz to venture out and collect the ball.

63' Leander careless with his pass, which allows Bipin to pounce. He darted down the left flank and tried to square one across goal. Ivan Gonzalez sensed the danger and did the job of blocking the cross.

62' No can question Goa's intent to come back into the game but the Gaurs are under-performing in the final third. Ortiz has replaced Cabrera but there is little he can do if he does not get the service.

60' FCG SUB- Jorge Ortiz replaces Cabrera.

57' MCFC SUB- Vikram Singh replaces Raynier.

57' SHOT- Brilliant skill by Cassio as he turns away from a couple of defenders and plays a wonderful through ball to Angulo. Angulo set up Bipin, who attempted a curler, which was not on target. We have already seen Liston Colaco score a peach of a curler against ATK Mohun Bagan's opening match against the Kerala Blasters.

55' FCG SUB- Durand Cup joint-top scorer Devendra Murgaonkar (Five goals) replaces Romario.

53' SHOT- Cassinho with a low-driven shot with his left. It had power but not the accuracy. Dheeraj collects easily.

51' SHOT- Edu Bedia takes a thunderous shot on the volley, which flashes inches over the bar. The Goa skipper seemed to have been put off slightly by his own teammate Glan, who was also going for the ball.

50' FC Goa has started the half with the right intent- it is asking the questions for now with Mumbai pegged back into its own half for now.

47' A low-driven cross by Glan Martins in search of Romario but the ball is cleared by the Mumbai backline before the latter could get a touch.

47' No considerable threat posed by Goa from that corner.

46' A fast start to the second half by FC Goa as the Gaurs force a corner within 20 seconds.

46' FC GOA SUB- Nongdamba Naorem replaces Saviour

WE ARE BACK FOR THE SECOND HALF!!

Igor Angulo showed why he was the Golden Boot winner last season by scoring a brace in the first half. A half marred by fouls, Mumbai City FC felt hard done by when Leander's challenge on Vignesh inside the box was not given as a penalty but the Islanders slowly got into the game and finished the half 2-0 up.

Raynier should have made it three just before the break but his one-on-one effort saw the ball hit the crossbar.

A happy half for Mumbai except for Vignesh's injury, which forced the player off.

HALF-TIME!! (MUMBAI CITY FC 2-0 FC GOA)

TWO ADDITIONAL MINUTES!!

45' CLOSE- Papuia loses the ball after Cassio's pressure. Outnumbered in defence, Raynier was played the ball and was clear on goal .He was one-on-one with Dheeraj. However, his shot cannons back into play after hitting the crossbar. That should have been number three for Mumbai.

43' A good delivery by Bedia as he dinks it over the wall. The ball finds Ivan Gonzalez but the player could not get a decent contact. Nawaz collects and Mumbai is safe.

42' FOUL- Apuia's dangling leg catches Papuia. FC Goa with a freekick in a good area.

38' SHOT- Cassio takes a shot from distance now, which Dheeraj punches away. It was travelling well but was straight at the keeper, which made Dheeraj's job easier.

37' Igor Angulo, last season's Golden Boot winner with 14 goals has had a brilliant start and is really hurting his former team.

36' GOOOAAALLLLLL!!! ANGULO AGAIN!!! TWO IN TWO MINUTES!! A great pass from Jahouh. Angulo still had a lot to do. Surrounded by players, Angulo just poked the ball into the net out of Dheeraj's reach. A classy finish.

34' GOOOOAAAALLLL!!! ANGULO CONVERTS FROM THE SPOT!! A CALM FINISH FROM THE VETERAN!!

33' PENALTY- This time Mumbai does get the penalty. Cassio holds the ball well inside the box and invites Ivan for the challenge who obliges. A clear penalty and there isn't any protest from the Goa players.

30' CHANCE- How was FC Goa not scored there? Mumbai trying to play out from the back, concedes possession in its box after Glan Martins snatches the ball. He passes the ball to Cabrera but the forward could not read the pass. Mumbai survives.

28' BOOKING- FC Goa's Romario sees yellow for his mistimed challenge on Cassio. The first booking of the evening.

27' FC Goa has been quite indisciplined in its play till now, conceding unnecessary fouls in dangerous areas.

25' CHANCE- The ball spun in the air and landed in front of Raynier who was positioned well inside the box. But the player could not get over the ball and balloons his shot over goal.

25' A wasted freekick by Jahouh as his delivery is too deep and the ball goes out of play.

24' Another crunching challenge by Leander on Rakip and Mumbai has a freekick in a good area. Mourtada Fall time?

23' Raynier bends a low cross in from the right. The ball had a good trajectory but Dheeraj anticipates the flight of the ball and catches it.

22' Glan Martins has just passed the ball out of play without any pressure whatsoever. Early season blues that one.

19' Trivia- FC Goa skipper Edu Bedia is the longest serving foreigner at the club. This is his fifth season.

17' MUMBAI SUB- Vignesh is replaced by Rakip. That challenge by Leander seems to have taken a toll on Vignesh's ankle.

15' Further replay indicates that it was indeed a penalty to Mumbai as Vignesh was clearly brought down inside the box. A strange call by the referee there.

14' PENALTY SHOUT- A brilliant run by Vignesh from the flank inside Goa's box but he is brought down inside the penalty-area by Leander. Mumbai players cry penalty but the referee waves those claims off.

13' A good passing move by FC Goa into Mumbai's half but it is halted as Saviour Gama is offside.

10' SHOT- Brilliant link up play by Mumbai involving Angulo, Raynier and Cassio. Cassio set Angulo up for the shot but it was a weak one, which did not trouble Dheeraj.

8' Mumbai's main attacking outlet for now seems to be Bipin Singh from the left flank. He has already made some surging runs with the intention of crossing the ball into the box.

6' A long ball pinged from midfield encouraged Igor Angulo to go on a run but Goa keeper Dheeraj reaches the ball before the veteran striker could get a touch.

4' A fast start to the match with both teams applying the press when the opposition has the ball.  Clear attacking intent being shown by both teams.

2' Bipin putting pressure on the Goa backline. He attempts a cross from the left flank, which is blocked. Mumbai corner.

A decent delivery but Goa clears the ball without much fuss.

1' A nervy start from Apuia as his long backpass leads to a Goa corner.

MATCH PREVIEW: ISL 2021-22: Mumbai City begins title defence with battle against FC Goa

A refreshed  Mumbai City FC  will begin its shield and title double defence when it takes on  FC Goa  in the  Indian Super League  clash (ISL 2021-22) at the Fatorda Stadium in Goa on Monday.

Club captain and no. 1 goalkeeper Amrinder Singh was released in the summer, while among the overseas players, Mumbai City has only retained defender Mourtada Fall and midfielder Ahmed Jahouh from the title-winning season. Head coach Sergio Lobera was replaced by Des Buckingham a little over a month back.

The club – part of the City Football Group – will hope to start sharp against Goa, which won the Durand Cup with a near-full strength squad last month.

With the addition of last season’s emerging player of the year, Lalengmawia, Mumbai City boasts a set of youthful domestic players, who are ready to step up again.

Fall, who was named captain earlier this week, said the playing style will persist despite the change in the coaching set-up. “Our style of play -- it's similar but the coach brings a bit more than what we had last season,” said the 33-year-old centre-back.

No team has successfully defended the title in the short history of the league and the challenge for Buckingham will be to motivate the side to do it all over again. “We asked that question to the players. We can either look at our success last season and be satisfied with winning one championship and one final, or we actually build upon that and try and continue building our club,” said the 36-year-old.

Juan Ferrando’s Goa finished fourth last season before exiting the playoffs in a penalty shoot-out to Mumbai City in the semifinals. Goa has a good mix of youthful domestic and experienced overseas players, who have settled into the Spaniard’s style of attacking football. The three-month-long pre-season will hold Goa in good stead compared to its competitors.

“I think the most important thing for me in this moment is the team is clear on mentality in attack and defense. I hope in our plan, we see a big effort from the players, and they enjoy on the pitch," said Ferrando.
