From thereon, the tempo dropped drastically and only picked up in the last few minutes of the match. Chances on both ends went begging before referee Michael Oliver drew curtains on the game with the final whistle.
Rashford picked up from where he left off in the second half, forcing the issue after resumption and earing a penalty. He converted the penalty with easy to hand United back the lead.
United kept the tempo up and forced multiple saves from Spurs 'keeper Gazzaniga. Alli, at the stoke of half-time, produced a moment of magic to slot the ball past De Gea into the back of the net and pull back level.
The lion's share of the first half belonged to Manchester United, courtesy some scintillating attacking from the forwards and wingers. Rashford got onto the score sheet first by firing home in the near corner.
Manchester United extends its unbeaten streak at home, in all competitions to nine, while Spurs' poor away form worsens.
Manchester United hangs on to deny Jose Mourinho a happy return to Old Trafford.

85' SAVE! De Gea stops another move from Spurs. Once again, the poor quality on the pass from Aurier results into De Gea collecting the ball. Spurs players flushed forward, but no to use.
84' SAVE! Eriksen steals the ball from McTominay in the centre. He plays a soft ball to the left to Son. Son then clips it across the field to Aurier, who ends up hitting it straight to De Gea.

79' JUST OVER! Son's step-over to his left allows him enough time to put a decent ball in with his left foot. The ball is a bit heavy and Aurier darts inside the box. But he is late on the header as the ball scrambles away for a United throw-in.
Since Rashford's goal, there has been a sudden plunge in intensity from both ends. Neither teams really forcing the issue. United a bit scrappy in its own half, while a poor day in the final third for Spurs and its strikers continues.
77' SAVE! Once again, Spurs strikers fail to penetrate through the defence on time as Aurier, who's afforded space and time on th left black, puts in a cross with his left foot only to be gathered by De Gea.
73' McTominay with a little tussle with Gazzaniga and the referee has to step in to calm the flaring tempers down. Gazzaniga a bit eager to snatch the ball away from McTominay behind goal and the United player was not happy. Gives the Spurs keeper a little nudge on his way back.
70' Corner for Spurs now! The poor corner is steered away and Tottenham breaks on the counter. A ball from the right is cleared off by Lindelof. Eriksen takes the corner but nothing comes off it!
68' ANOTHER SAVE FROM GAZZANIGA! A full-stretch dive to his left as he parries the ball away for a United corner. Great anticipation from Fred as is quick off his marker to get the ball. Plays it to Lingard, who passes it first time to Greenwood. Greenwood passes it back and Lingard and he finds James, who tees up only for the low curler to be saved.
66' FOUL! Fred shoves Harry Winks down in the right flank. Winks plays a one-two with Kane, who puts perfect weight on the return pass to free Winks. Winks then takes a long touch and then charges for the ball. Fred brings him down with a challenge and Harry is now receiving treatment on the sidelines.

64' Aurier with a stinging cross from the right, but nobody to play to in the centre. Wan-Bissaka cannnot clear it cleanly, but does just enough to steer any other danger away,
62' It's James but saved! Fred with plays a short pass to James in the centre. Daniel James takes a crack at it, trying to put it behinf Gazzaniga. But the ball is not menacing enough and is easily collected by the keeper.
59' Vertonghen with a cross from the left flank keeps De Gea interested for a minute as the ball cuts in sharply and falls on the top of goal.
57' Rashford is in the thick of the action again! This time, trough the centre and looks for Greenwood with a short through ball. But Sanchez does well to keep Mason off the ball and allowing the keeper to collect the ball.
55' Corner! First off the night for Spurs! Harry Kane with a left-footed shot from just outside the box is deflected off Lindelof's boot and it is dragged wide. A poor corner is cleared away by United defenders with ease.
54' Moura is not happy! Sissoko plays a parallel ball Moura in the right flank. Young is keeping up with Moura and the ball goes out of play. Moura thinks the ball had come off Young, but it's a throw in for United. Moura delays in passing the ball back to Young.
52' Scrappy from Young, but no harm done! Young give it away inside his own half. Moura latches onto it and whips a quick lob ball to Son in the box, who meets it brilliantly well. Then goes to his right and then takes a shot. Fred blocks it and clears it away.
49' GOOOOAOLLLLLL! Rashford makes it 2-1 for United! He takes it calmly and slots it easily into right corner, sending Gazzaniga the wrong way!
47' PENALTY TO UNITED! It's all happening at Old Trafford! Once again, Rashford with a threatening run on the left. Lightning quick pace to cut in to the box and Sissoko was always second best there. He puts in a late challenge after Rashford goes past him. Rashford goes down after being met with a challenge. Michael Oliver, the referee, awards the penalty.

It's a new Dele Alli we are seeing under Jose Mourinho. The large part of the first half belonged to United. A positive start from the onset and constant pressure up front resulted in the opening goal. Gazzaniga made a couple of good saves to deny the host another goal. Then arrived the moment of the night so far, when Alli showed excellent control and presence of mind to draw back level.
The first 45 minutes of this clash have lived up to the billing! Two brilliant goals from both ends, but how about that for a finish from Alli.

45+2: Corner! Rashford win the corner, using his explosive pace. Sanchez meets the ball just in time to clear it off for a corne. Fred takes the corner but Davinson Sanchez towers over three United players in the box and heads it clear.
THREE MINUTES HAVE BEEN ADDED ON!
44' Gazzaniga to the rescue! Fred with a great long ball from inside United's half. Rashford makes the run for it. The Spurs keeper charges forward and makes himself large. He clears the ball off danger and then chases it to his right to keep the ball inbounds. In the process, he collides with Rashford.
VAR checks the goal as the ball clips off Alli's shoulder. United players believe the ball had hit Alli's hand, but the original decision remains. The goal is awarded and Spurs is back level!
39' GOOOOALL! Dele Alli draws back Spurs level! What a goal! One of the best touches you'll see all night. De Gea makes a lovely save with his left leg from a shot at close range by Aurier. The ball flies back in and falls right in front of goal. Alli pulls off a moment of brilliance there. His control on the looping ball is sumptuous as he flicks it over and past Young and Fred and then turns, meets it on the full to put it past De Gea.
35' Wan-Bissaka does well to get up on his feet in the right wing to win the ball back after the tussle. He finds Greenwood, who plays to Fred. Young comes forward to support. Lingard, after receiving the bal,, plays it back wide to Bisakka. He plays a through ball, trying to find Greenwood. But the striker is taken by surprise and nothing is materialised from that move.
32' Scrappy! Son plays an inch-perfect chip pass to Aurier in the right from the centre. Aurier puts the ball inside the box, but it's too strong as it flies over Alli and Kane.
28' Just wide! Young threads a pass through to Lingard who takes his chance from outside the box on the left. He can't curl it enough as the ball is hit wide of the left post.

27' ANOTHER SAVE! It's that man again, Marcus Rashford. Lingard puts immaculate weight and pace on the pass that finds Rashford at the edge of the box on the left wing. He takes a crack at it only for the ball to be parried away by a diving Gazzaniga. Fred's corner is cleared away.
25' WOODWORK! Rashford almost makes it 2-0. He is in form today. Rashford rifles it with all his might from a few yards away from the box. The ball clips the fingertips of a diving Gazzaniga and ricochets off the crossbar and back into the field.
23' SAVE! Corner for United! Daniel James from the right flank with a lovely grounded pass to to Lingard inside the box. Lingard plays it to Greenwood, who tries to beat the Spurs keeper with pace at the near post in the right. But Gazzaniga was up to the task this time as he gets down just in the nick of time and clears it away with his right knee for a corner. The short corner from James is cleared away by ease.
18' Aurier with a lovely lob pass, from the right flank, to Alli inside the box but the first touch off his chest is too strong and the ball is cleared away.
17' Free-kick to United! Sissoko with a late challenge on Fred, who is brought down by a blow to his knee! Rashford, who scored a screamer against Chelsea, will take the free-kick. He goes for the far post, to his left and he almost puts in the back of the net. Whips it really well, but the shot flies just wide.
16' Alderweireld to the resuce! Greenwood receives a quick pass from Wan-Bissaka in the right wing and before he could make a move, the ball is cleared by the Spurs defender.
13' Heavy fall for James! Yellow card for Harry Winks! James is advancing up the right flank before being met with a diving challenge from Harry Winks. James then rolls over, outside the sidelines, and his heads hits Mourinho's knee. A very heavy blow he's taken there, but he's okay.
11' FREE-KICK! In a very promising position for Tottenham. Harry Kane charges in the ball and is brought down by a late challenge from Fred, who tries to win the ball by sticking his left leg out. England skipper sets himself up and hits the curler up and over goal.
7' GOOALLLLL!! Marcus Rashford puts United in front. Fred starts the move in mid-field and the pass is straight to Lingard, who plays a cheeky past to find Rashford. Davinson intercepts and while trying to clear the ball he loses balance and falls over. Rashford wins the ball back and whips it from the edge of the corner and past Spurs goalkeeper Gazzaniga in the near post. Strong right-footed finish from the United winger.
5' Threating run, but safe! Manchester United bossing the possession and setting the temp. Rashford with a threating run on the left, cuts in and finds Lingard in the box. But the ball is cleared by Aurier.
4' Mason Greenwood asks for a corner in the left-wing, claiming the last touch was made by Aurier. But referee awards Spurs a goal kick.
1' Early movement on the left flank from United. Ashley Young with a long ball from the left-back, trying to find Marcus Rashford, but the ball is cleared. Good positive start from United, dominating the possession.

When Jose Mourinho was sacked by Manchester United, not many would have predicted he would come back to Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur. Tonight, he returns to former stomping ground, his former club, Manchester United.
While we wait for this high-octane clash to begin, you can go through the preview and what Jose Mourinho needs to be wary of.
MATCH PREVIEW:
"Respect, respect, respect" was the call from Jose Mourinho that echoed through football the last time he was involved in a Manchester United versus Tottenham clash at Old Trafford.
Here was a manager on the cusp of a crisis, in full confrontational mode at a post-match news conference that passed boiling point - riled when it was pointed out many home supporters had walked out before the final whistle.
Here was Mourinho defending his patch ferociously, standing up for his players, for the supporters and, lastly, for himself. Showing three fingers, and pointing to how he has won three Premier League trophies.

United's 3-0 home defeat to Spurs in August 2018 was a result that demanded answers and Mourinho had plenty.
Conspiracy theorists might contend otherwise, but Mourinho would maintain he intended to see out his United contract, if not stay for longer. That he was planning to still be in charge today rather than take his leave early, sacked by Christmas last year with a tidy pay-off banked.
Therefore, another theory goes that he is in some way a reluctant Tottenham head coach, and would sooner, in a perfect world, be commandeering the home side than Spurs on Wednesday.
His United service was due to run until the end of this season, yet Mourinho will be in the enemy trenches as he brings Tottenham to a familiar parish.
Here is a look at what Mourinho might expect on his return as a rival manager.
UNITED IS A CHANGED TEAM
Under his successor, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the start of a United clear-out occurred in the off-season, and four of the players who played a part in Mourinho's final game have moved on.
Romelu Lukaku, Matteo Darmian, Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini, who was a substitute in Mourinho's sorry 3-1 swansong defeat at Anfield, have new homes, and Solskjaer has changed the face of the first team.

Appropriately, it is baby-faced in places, with the manager putting his trust in the likes of young Welsh winger Daniel James and pricey but promising full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, along with raw teenagers such as Brandon Williams and Mason Greenwood. Harry Maguire, finding his feet, is a player Mourinho wanted but could not get.
Whether the facelift has done the craggy model any favours, however, is already up for question. James has consistently looked the part, and other newcomers have shown top-level ability in flickers.
But 18 points from 14 games is a shabby return for a club of United's status, and Mourinho will know United is ripe to be still sitting on that same haul after its 15th game.
"THE BEST JUDGE IN FOOTBALL ARE THE SUPPORTERS"
Moments before his demand for "respect" last year, Mourinho stood up for United's supporters and pointed out how they had appreciated United's efforts in the heavy defeat to Spurs, and it was true enough - especially before the goals flowed.
This time they will judge him, and it remains to be seen how Mourinho is greeted on his Old Trafford return.

He was received enthusiastically when back as a television pundit earlier this season, but now that his allegiance has switched so the affection for the Portuguese could be in short supply.
The United faithful willed Mourinho to do well, and many bought into the sense of siege mentality that pervaded the latter stages of his reign, but with time and reflection comes clear thinking and reasoned reckoning.
Solskjaer is now the man they are willing to succeed, and any warmth towards Mourinho may well prove short-lived.
THE NEW HOME'S AN UPGRADE
Never mind swapping a five-star Manchester travel tavern for London's home comforts, there might be another thought that strikes Mourinho when he arrives back in the north-west on Wednesday.
When he walks out at Old Trafford, he will surely notice how 20th century it looks compared to the gleaming Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
It is hard to avoid the conclusion Mourinho has landed on his feet with a supreme opportunity, inheriting a team equipped to compete for honours and a club with its compass pointing to progress.
Tottenham has been built for success, largely by Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy, and Mourinho might get them over the line with a trophy.
Another Old Trafford statement result by Spurs would go some way to persuading sceptics that Mourinho still has what it takes to deliver silverware to his new club. Along with three points, a polished performance would positively demand respect.
For struggling Solskjaer, such an outcome would bring reminders United is no stranger to December dismissals.
