Meanwhile, Europe’s governing football body, UEFA, has opened disciplinary proceedings against Celtic following the incident. It said the Scottish club will have to answer charges of lack of organisation and improper conduct of supporters.

The incident occurred after Celtic scored a late goal to seal a 2-1 victory over the European champions in their Group D clash at Celtic Park. A supporter ran onto the field and slapped Dida on the shoulders. The Brazilian international goalkeeper first tried to chase after the fan before theatrically collapsing to the ground clutching his face. He was immediately substituted.

UEFA is also seeking clarification from AC Milan on the reason for the substitution of their goalkeeper.
