Modi’s gesture

The IPL Chairman and Commissioner, Lalit Modi, may be perceived as being ruthless and very ambitious, but his charity work has not gone unnoticed. He has donated R100,000 (Rs five lakh) to a high school in Port Elizabeth as part of the IPL’s Help Educate and Teach (HEAT) initiative. He made the donation to 35 pupils and educators, including headmaster Dan Ngcape of the Ndzondelelo High School at St. George’s Park Stadium. The learners and educators from a local black township were hosted by Modi in the stadium’s Presidential Suite. According to Modi, 30 schools from around the country would benefit from the HEAT programme. “The second part of the HEAT Programme will benefit individual learners attending DLF IPL matches. Five learners will be identified at every match and their faces flashed on the stadium screens. Each of them will have R15,000 paid into their school fees account in their names,” he said.

Modi said an extension of the HEAT project would see several disadvantaged schools from each of the DLF IPL host cities receiving 1,000 tickets per game on a first-come, first-served basis. The HEAT Programme is part of R8 million (about Rs. 40 million) that the IPL has set aside for the advancement of education among less privileged children in South Africa.
