A nine-member Indian team for the Asian 20 km Race Walking Championships in Nomi, Japan, left late on Thursday night.

The competition is scheduled to be held on March 19 with the Indian team accompanied by Russian coach Alexander Artsybashev.

Gurmeet Singh became the first Indian to win gold in the competition last year, at the same venue, with a time of 1 hour 20 minutes and 29 seconds. Gurmeet, however, has been excluded for the Indian side this time around.

The Indian team was selected on the performances at the 4th National Race Walking Championships here on February 18, won by K. T. Irfan among the men and Priyanka in the women's category.

The squad:

Men: Devender Singh, Ganapathi Krishnan, Jai Bhagwan, Eknath Sambhaji Turambekar, Sunil, K. T. Irfan

Women: Priyanka, Rani Yadav, Shanti Kumari
