Sehwag has requested to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to honour Dipa Karmakar and Lalita Babar for their outstanding performances at the Rio Olympics.

Former Test opener Virender Sehwag on Monday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to honour Dipa Karmakar and Lalita Babar for their outstanding performances at the Rio Olympics.

Battling against all odds, Dipa took the fourth spot in vault gymnastics while Lalita came 10th in the final of the 3000m steeplechase.

“Everyone likes saluting the rising sun. Though our champions at Rio have thus far not won a medal for their incredible efforts and skills, the way some of them have fought against all odds has been amazing,” tweeted Sehwag.

“What Dipa Karmakar and Lalita Babar, have achieved despite the enormous challenges they have faced through their personal situations is truly exceptional. It’s important that we honour their efforts,” said Sehwag.

He requested Modi to consider, “naming a special plane and train after these two young athletes (even if it is a special for a few days and at the cost of not causing confusion) which in a way will encourage parents and inspire many youngsters to take up less popular sports as a career.”
