The Sports Ministry is set to remove the Rs. 2 lakh per month cap for Indian coaches, fulfilling a long-standing demand in an attempt to bring parity and encourage more Indians to turn to professional coaching. They would also be given four-year contacts, subject to annual review, at par with foreign coaches.

“Several Indian coaches are showing very good results and need to be rewarded for their hard work. The government is also keen to attract the best coaching talent from across the country to train our elite athletes and we do not want the cap on compensation to be a deterrent for good coaches to join," Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju said.

The salary cap was a big concern for many Indian coaches working with elite athletes and national teams who considered it discriminatory. Foreign coaches in India currently draw anywhere between $4000-15000 as remuneration. That, along with the absence of a long-term contract, was often cited as a reason for more former Indian athletes and coaches not being involved in full-time coaching.

Coaches and former international athletes employed in various Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and joining national teams on deputation would also be eligible for a four-year contract as well as the higher salary structure.
