European Open eighth seed Federico Delbonis saw his tournament ended at the first hurdle by Andreas Seppi on Monday.
Seppi prevailed in a three-set contest that lasted almost three hours, the Italian winning 7-6 (9-7), 5-7, 6-3 in Antwerp.
He will now face Robin Haase, who overcame Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-4, 6-2.
Spain's Inigo Cervantes beat Michael Berrer 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 to set up a second-round tie with third seed Richard Gasquet.
