Vijay Hazare Trophy: Ajinkya Rahane to lead Mumbai

Not a part of the Asia Cup — to be held in the UAE from next week — Rahane will be hoping to strike form in the limited overs format.

Ajinkya Rahane will lead Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which gets underway next week. Not a part of the Asia Cup — to be held in the UAE from next week — Rahane will be hoping to strike form in the limited overs format. Despite some good starts, the batsman had a mixed outing in England, and this is chance to get in shape before the Test series against the West Indies.

While Rahane will lead the side — taking over from Aditya Tare — another India international, Shreyas Iyer, has been named his deputy. Prithvi Shaw, who was recently picked for the England Test series, will also feature in the stateside for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The side, however, will miss the services of Rohit Sharma, who will lead the Indian team in the Asia Cup.

Mumbai will begin its campaign at the Vijay Hazare Trophy against Baroda at the Karnataka State Cricket Association ground in Alur on September 19. The team is grouped with Baroda, Karnataka, Railways, Vidarbha, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Goa and Maharashtra in the group stage.
