Melbourne Stars' Luke Wright and Glenn Maxwell

Luke Wright was in the runs again and Glenn Maxwell also made a swift half-century to ensure Melbourne Stars made it three Big Bash League wins in a row with an eight-wicket success over Hobart Hurricanes. Wright scored a sublime 109 not out to secure a derby victory against Melbourne Renegades at a packed MCG on Saturday and added an unbeaten 51 from 41 balls at the same ground four days later to enhance the Stars' chances of making the finals.

Maxwell also put on a show, bludgeoning 56 not out off 32 deliveries to get the Stars home with five overs to spare after the Hurricanes had been bowled out for 124 and slumped to a second successive defeat. Australia all-rounder Maxwell (1-25) claimed the wicket of Tim Paine (0) from the third ball of the match courtesy of a brilliant catch from James Faulkner in the deep.

Michael Beer (1-12) got rid of the dangerous Kumar Sangakkara (1) in the next over and the Hurricanes were in deep trouble on 31-4 when Ben Dunk and Dan Christian also fell cheaply. George Bailey (55) and Jonathan Wells (22) halted the procession of wickets, with the former smashing two sixes in his 40-ball knock before Adam Zampa (2-18) dismissed them both in the 16th over.

Scott Boland (2-26) took two wickets in a final over which also included a run out and the Hurricanes' total was never going to be enough despite a poor start from the in-form Stars. Kevin Pietersen (1) was run out after Marcus Stoinis had been sent on his way for only 10, but Wright and Maxwell put on 99 in just 10 overs to get the Stars home at a canter.
