Michael Di Venuto will leave his role as assistant to Australia head coach Darren Lehmann in April after being confirmed as the new head coach of Surrey.

The 42-year-old has signed a three-year contract with the club, and has experience of the County Championship following spells at Durham, Derbyshire and Sussex.

Di Venuto spent three years as assistant at Australia, as well as acting as batting coach, and filled in as head coach when Lehmann was suffering from deep-vein thrombosis last month.

"It has been a huge honour and privilege to have worked with the Australian team but the chance to come to a club of the size and potential of Surrey as head coach was too big an opportunity for me to turn down," he said.

"As someone who has always enjoyed the county game, I have followed Surrey's progress over the last couple of years and look forward to working with this talented squad of players."

"Michael has played a very important role supporting the Australian team over the last three years, including this past home summer when he stood in for Darren Lehmann as head coach," added Cricket Australia chief Pat Howard.

"He has brought a tremendous work ethic and commitment to the role and we have no doubt that this head coaching opportunity with Surrey will provide him with fantastic experience leading his own team, continuing his rapid development as an elite coach.

"We thank him for his great service and hope that at some point in the future we can welcome him back to Australian cricket."
