Shastri's name figured prominently as a strong candidate for the post, after Anil Kumble decided against continuing as the Head Coach at the end of the ICC Champions Trophy in England.
It was in unpleasant circumstances that Kumble had to make way for his replacement. He had gone to the extent of saying that working with Virat Kohli had become untenable .
Shastri did not respond to the BCCI advertisement inviting applications for the position of Head Coach from interested candidates on May 25.
Once Kumble announced his decision to withdraw, the BCCI extended the timeline of its advertisement to July 9 and exempted candidates who had responded to the first advertisement from applying again.
Shastri initially worked with Zimbabwean Duncan Fletcher, but after the ICC World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in 2015, he led the coaching staff of the team. He and Kohli share a good rapport and it's speculated that the India captain may have suggested to the BCCI that Shastri may be considered.
Those who responded to the first advertisement are Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Richard Pybus, Lalchand Rajput, Dodda Ganesh and Craig McDermott.
The Cricket Advisory Committee of the BCCI comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and V.V.S. Laxman will conduct interviews and recommend their choice to the BCCI. It was under the recommendation of the CAC that Kumble was appointed the Head Coach last year.
