Sunil Subramanian is likely to take over as the Director of the TNCA Academy, Sportstar has learnt from sources.

The former Tamil Nadu and South Zone left-arm spinner will be arriving here on Friday from the West Indies, which was his last assignment as the administrative manager of the Indian cricket team, concluding a two-year stint at the job.

The 52-year-old cricketer with 285 first-class wickets in 74 matches at 23.53 will be hoping for a fresh start after a troubled tour of the Caribbean on a personal front where two sets of narratives emerged - 1. He was rude to some members of the Indian diplomatic staff, 2. He was only following the BCCI protocol in the absence of a clear directive from the Board on such issues.

The TNCA Academy is not new to Sunil, known for his cricketing nous and ability to pick talent. He has worked here previously as a head coach and overseen the development of several bowlers.

Importantly, he played a significant role in honing the skills of a young R. Ashwin, who has become one of India’s most successful spinners.

Sunil should take over from D. Vasu, the last full-time occupant of the TNCA Academy director’s post. Vasu now has taken over as the coach of the Tamil Nadu senior side.

Lack of quality bowling options is a major area of concern for the State side - both for the senior and the various age-group sides - and Sunil could be up against a challenge.
